CHICAGO - Butler University took down Youngstown State University 3-1 in game seven of the Horizon League Championship at Loyola Softball Park. The Bulldogs will advance to face Loyola University Chicago in game 10 at 4:00 p.m. YSU's loss eliminated the Penguins from the tournament.
Butler improved to 17-28 on the year while Youngstown State closed out the 2008 season with a 13-37 mark.
Sophomore right-hander Jennifer Chasteen picked up the victory for the Bulldogs. Chasteen worked 7.0 innings and struck out five batters. Youngstown State's Becky Hibner took the loss and fell to 1-10 on year. The YSU senior tossed 6.0 innings, allowed three earned runs and did not walk a batter.
Offensively for the Bulldogs, senior Jenny Jacobs and freshman Erin Jackson each collected a pair of hits. Jackson's two hits increased her tournament batting average to .600.
Butler took a 1-0 lead in the fourth inning after Jacobs doubled to centerfield, which scored junior Alex Boros from first base. Boros got on base after she singled in the up the middle.
The Bulldogs struck again in the fifth inning as they plated two more runs to increase their advantage to 3-0. Senior Amy Hyerczyk had a ground rule double to right-centerfield, which scored freshman Lauren Ott from third. Sophomore Jen Arriaga came up next and drove in Hyerczyk from second as she hit a single into center field.
Youngstown State cut the lead to 3-1 in the sixth inning. Freshman Katy Potakar drove in fellow newcomer Rochelle Vanyi from second. Vanyi reached base after she slapped a double to right-centerfield.
Butler closed out Youngstown State limiting the Penguins to just one hit in the top half of the seventh.
