Softball Player of the Week

UW-Green Bay, Sophomore, C, Pulaski, Wis.

UW-Green Bay sophomore Andrea Kurzynske is the Horizon League Softball Player of the Week for the period ending Feb. 13.

 

Kurzynske had a solid week for the Phoenix, going 3-10 in four games at the Metrodome Classic Feb. 10-13. Kurzynske added two doubles and an RBI on the week.

 

 

Softball Pitcher of the Week

 

Stephanie Hansen

UW-Green Bay, Senior, P, Moline, Ill.

 

UW-Green Bay senior Stephanie Hansen is the Horizon League Softball Pitcher of the Week for the period ending Feb. 13.

 

Hansen earned all-tournament team honors at the Metrodome Classic Feb. 10-13. On the mound, the senior posted a 4.02 ERA in 15.2 innings of work including six strikeouts while scattering 14 hits. Offensively, Hansen was 2-8 on the weekend.

 

 

Horizon League News & Notes

 

Butler Bulldogs (0-0, 0-0 HL)

The Bulldogs open the 2005 season on the road at the University of Tennessee-Martin Tournament in Martin, Tenn. on Feb. 19-20. Butler will open up with three games on Saturday, starting with the host Skyhawks (10:00 a.m. EST), followed by Saint Louis (12:30 p.m.) and IUPUI (3:00 p.m.). On Sunday the Bulldogs finish out the tournament with games against Indiana State at 10:00 a.m. and Belmont at 12:30 p.m. 

 

Cleveland State (0-0, 0-0 HL)

Cleveland State opens its season in less than three weeks, when it travels to Charleston, S.C. for the Charleston Southern Invite March 4-6. On day one, the Vikings open with Tennessee Tech at noon EST followed by College of Charleston for a mid-afternoon start. Day two begins with a noon showdown with the host Buccaneers and then capped off against North Carolina A&T in the afternoon at 4:00 p.m. Bracket Play begins on Sunday with times and opponents to be determined. 

 

Detroit Titans (0-0, 0-0 HL)

For the fourth year in a row, the Detroit softball team had one of the highest GPA's in America.  The Titans placed fourth overall with a 3.466. That also tied them with the tennis team at UDM for the school's highest GPA.

 

Junior Pitcher of the Year candidate Lindsay Roy (Brampton, ON/Turner Fenton Secondary) was named the top pitcher at 2004 Junior Women's Canadian Fast Pitch Championships that ran from Aug. 8-15 in Saskatoon, Saskatchewan. Roy posted a 4-0 record with a 0.00 ERA in 26 innings pitched with 24 strikeouts as a member of the Cambridge Junior Ladies.

 

Detroit returns eight starters from 2004 and all four of its pitchers as well for head coach Bob Wilkerson. The Titans begin their season with the Rebel Spring Games in Orlando, Fla. where they will play 10 games from March 6-11.

 

UIC Flames (0-0, 0-0 HL)

The defending Horizon League champion Flames kickoff the 2005 campaign in the Georgia Southern Tournament in Statesboro, Ga. from Feb. 18-20. UIC opens with nationally ranked No. 14 Tennessee on Friday at 1:00 p.m. EST followed by the host Eagles at 3:00 p.m. On Saturday, the Flames have a late morning contest with Mercer before taking on Charleston at 1:00 p.m. The Flames third game on Saturday will begin the elimination round and will continue into Sunday.  

 

Loyola Ramblers (0-0, 0-0 HL)

The 2004 Horizon League Tournament runner-up Ramblers begin the 2005 season on the road in Las Cruces, N.M. in the New Mexico State Tournament on Feb. 18-20. Loyola opens the tournament with Texas-San Antonio on Friday morning at 11:00 a.m. EST followed by a nightcap with the host Aggies at 9:00 p.m. Saturday is also a double-dip for the Ramblers as they open with Nebraska at 5:00 p.m. and finish up with New Mexico at 7:00 p.m. On Sunday, Loyola finishes the tournament with one lone contest, as it meets Colorado State at 1:00 p.m.

 

UW-Green Bay Phoenix (0-5, -0 HL)

The Phoenix went 0-5 at the six-team Metrodome Classic Feb. 10-13, hosted by the University of Minnesota. UW-Green Bay will return to action March 13 at the Rebel Spring Games in Orlando, Fla.

 

Wright State Raiders (0-0, 0-0 HL)

The 2003 Horizon League champions open the 2005 slate in the Peach State as the Raiders travel to Atlanta, Ga. to participate in the Georgia State Spring Classic Feb. 26-27. Wright State begins play bright and early on Saturday against Drexel at 10:00 a.m. EST, followed with a 2:30 p.m. game against the host Panthers. On the final day, the Raiders will begin with Tennessee-Martin at 12:15 p.m. and then finish up the classic with Bracket Play later that afternoon.

 

Youngstown State (0-0, 0-0 HL)

The Penguins open their 2005 campaign in two weeks when they travel to Richmond, Ky. for the Eastern Kentucky Tournament Feb. 26-27. Youngstown State opens play against Dayton at 10:30 a.m. EST on Saturday, followed by the Jaguars of IUPUI at 1:00 p.m. On Sunday, the Penguins close out the tournament against the host Colonels at 11:00 a.m.
