Softball Player of the Week
SHANNON GRAVES
Cleveland State, Junior, OF, Medina, Ohio
Cleveland State junior Shannon Graves is the Horizon League Softball Player of the Week for the period ending May 8.
Batting in the number two spot, Graves jumpstarted the Viking offense all week long, hitting .563 (9-for-16) with six runs scored and a pair of stolen bases. She was especially impressive in the weekend series sweep of Loyola, going 7-for-9 (.778) with a pair of three-hit games to extend her hitting streak to five contests.
Softball Pitcher of the Week
GRACE LUGINBUHL
Cleveland State, Junior, RHP, Lima, Ohio
Cleveland State junior Grace Luginbuhl is the Horizon League Softball Pitcher of the Week for the period ending May 8.
Luginbuhl held the Loyola hitters in check, appearing in all three games over the weekend. She went 2-0 with a 0.93 ERA, allowing just two earned runs, 10 hits and a walk while fanning 13 in 15.0 innings of work. In the opener, she tossed a four-hit shutout with five strikeouts and did not allow a runner past second base after the first inning. After tossing a scoreless seventh in the second game, she held the Ramblers to just one hit through five innings in the finale, striking out five of the first six batters.
Other Top Player Performances - May 9
Anna Ollgaard, Detroit, Sr., OF (Portage, Mich.)
Ollgaard hit .385 with two homeruns, a double and seven RBIs for the Titans this week. Hit her homers against Wright State and UIC. Also shined in the field as she had eight putouts and four assists, none larger than her lazer beam like throw from center to gun down the final out at Wright State Tuesday in the 7-5 Titan win. She slugged .654 and had a .429 on-base percentage to go along with her 1.000 fielding percentage.
Brittany Dixon, UIC, Fr., OF (Orland Park, Ill.)
Dixon helped propel UIC to the Horizon League regular-season title, batting .667 (6-for-9) with two RBI in the Flames' weekend series sweep of Detroit. The true freshman batted .583 (7-for-12) overall during the week in four games. Dixon tallied at least one hit in all four of her outings while recording a season-high tying three knocks in game two of UIC's twinbill sweep of the Titans on Saturday. For the season, UIC's #2 hitter is batting .328 with a pair of home runs and 22 RBI. Her average raises to .373 in league contests with seven RBI.
Allison Scanlin, Loyola, Sr., 1B (Tacoma, Wash.)
Scanlin set the Loyola career record with her 86th RBI in Loyola's 4-3 loss at DePaul on May 5. The left-handed hitter went 2 for 2 with a double in the contest. Scanlin also has moved within one walk of equaling the Loyola career mark of 69 in that category and her double at DePaul moved her into a tie for third place on the Loyola career chart.
Ali Rostkowski, UW-Green Bay, Jr., SS (East Troy, Wis.)
In UW-Green Bay's three-game sweep of Wright State, Rostkowski led the Phoenix with a .500 batting average, three RBI and boasted a 1.000 slugging percentage thanks to a pair of triples on the weekend. Rostkowski, who leads the team this season with a .322 batting average, also was solid in the field, helping turn a double play and owning a 1.000 fielding percentage in 11 chances.
Other Top Pitching Performances - May 9
Brittany McIntyre, UIC, Jr., P (Orland Park, Ill.)
McIntyre keyed UIC's series sweep of Detroit and helped the Flames win the outright regular-season Horizon League title by going 2-0 with a save over the weekend while posting a 1.87 ERA. The junior started the series opener and picked up the win as UIC prevailed 11-3 in six innings. She then entered in relief in the nightcap with the Flames' clinging to a two-run lead and allowed just one tally in 2 1/3 innings to earn the save. McIntyre then started the series finale and did not allow an earned run to cross the plate as UIC edged Detroit, 3-2. For the season, McIntyre is now 19-12 while she finished 9-2 in league games with two saves and a 2.45 ERA. McIntyre did see action in the Flames' other two contests during the week, but did not factor in either decision.
Mia Pangere, Loyola, Sr., RHP (Crown Point, Ind.)
Pangere was a hard-luck loser last week, going 0-3 despite posting a 2.33 ERA. In a 4-3 loss at DePaul, the right-hander allowed only three earned runs and struck out four, then scattered six hits and surrendered only one earned run in a 2-1 loss at Cleveland State on May 7. She struck out three in 2.2 innings in the Ramblers' loss at CSU on May 8. Despite allowing only six earned runs, Pangere has dropped her last four decisions.
Stephanie Hansen, UW-Green Bay, Sr., RHP (Moline, Ill.)
Hansen notched her third shutout of the season against Wright State May 7, as her complete game four-hitter helped the Phoenix sweep the Raiders on the weekend. In her victory, Hansen struck out three and held Wright State to a .160 batting average and gave up no extra base hits. At the plate, Hansen helped her own cause, going 1-4 with an RBI double and a run in the 6-0 victory.
Amanda Cody, Wright State, So., P (Tampa, Fla.)
Cody struck-out seven batters at Dayton on May 5. A few days later she recorded six strikeouts in the first game of the UW-Green Bay series, before fanning seven in the
series finale.
Horizon League News & Notes
Butler Bulldogs (19-31, 7-12 HL)
Butler took last week off due to finals...the Bulldogs will be back in action on May 12 when they open up with No. 3 seed Cleveland State in the first round of the 2005 Softball Championships in Green Bay, Wis.
Cleveland State (21-24, 10-5 HL)
Cleveland State won 15 of its final 20 games, including an 8-1 mark down the stretch in Horizon League play, to earn the third seed in the upcoming Horizon League Championship...The Vikings' bats have carried the team through its recent hot streak, as CSU hit .310 in its last nine league games. Senior catcher Jackie Cornelius led the way with a .400 average (10-for-25), 14 RBI and a .720 slugging percentage...Already the winningest coach in school history, Julie Jones picked up her 200th career victory with Tuesday's win at Youngstown State.
Detroit Titans (16-26, 7-10 HL)
Detroit had a busy six days last week as the Titans played eight games in a six day span...with their seven League wins this season, the Titans surpassed their win total from last season (6)...after recording only three wins in 2004, senior right-handed pitcher Anna Ollgaard picked up a team-high six wins this season...Detroit opens the 2005 championship on Thursday against No. 4 Loyola in Green Bay, Wis.
UIC Flames (38-25, 14-4 HL)
UIC begins defense of its Horizon League Tournament crown on Thursday. The Flames have won seven of the last eight league tournaments with the lone exception coming in 2003 when ironically UIC fell in the second round to Youngstown State, the squad the Flames open the 2005 event against...UIC batted a staggering .362 as a team in league games this season with eight of the nine regular starters batting over .300. Senior Cameron Astiazaran led the way with a .531 league batting average with five home runs and 19 RBI...Senior Cameron Astiazaran broke the UIC single-season and career doubles record on Sunday with a two-bagger in her second at bat. It was her 26th double of the season and 66th of her career, passing marks held by former UIC All-American Edel Leyden...Astiazaran also became just the second player in school history to top the 90-hit plateau in a season over the week with six hits in the series with the Vikings. She now has 95 hits this season, just five shy of the UIC single-season record of 100 set by Leyden in 1999.
Loyola Ramblers (17-35, 8-9 HL)
Loyola has dropped eight consecutive contests, its longest skid since 1999, heading into the Horizon League Championship...senior 1B Allison Scanlin set the Loyola career record with her 86th RBI in Loyola's 4-3 loss at DePaul on May 5...senior Keilah Williams, who had been sidelined since March 30 with a broken arm, returned to action over the weekend at Cleveland State...sophomore Nora Schober clubbed her first career home run, a solo shot on her birthday, in Loyola's 3-1 loss to Western Michigan on May 3...over its last four contests, Loyola has managed only three runs...Loyola is closing in on the single-season school marks for home runs (26) and stolen bases (65), entering the tournament with 23 roundtrippers and 55 steals.
UW-Green Bay Phoenix (20-15, 13-5 HL)
After being selected to finish eighth in the Horizon League preseason poll, UW-Green Bay secured second place in the Horizon League with a three-game shutout sweep of Wright State May 7-8. The Phoenix will face the same Wright State team Thursday in the 2005 Horizon League Softball Championship opener...Freshman Vanessa Lefan, who has made just seven plate appearances this season, made her pinch batting moment Sunday against Wright State count. Lefan tallied her first career double and proceeded to score in the inning in UW-Green Bay's 2-0 victory...With the three straight shutouts by three different pitchers, UW-Green Bay's team ERA dropped to 2.14 on the season.
Wright State Raiders (14-22, 6-11 HL)
The Raiders found runs hard to come by last week as they managed just six total in five games, including being shutout in all three games at UW-Green Bay...After taking on UW-Oshkosh on Tuesday, Wright State will face the Phoenix again in the first round of the Horizon League Tournament Thursday.
Youngstown State (19-32, 4-13 HL)
McKenzie Bedra, who leads the team with seven home runs, has moved into a tie for third place on the YSU single-season home run chart...Junior Tiffany Patteson has moved into fifth place on the YSU all-time hits list with 168. She needs two more to move into third place. Patteson has also become YSU all-time runs leader with 99 runs scored during her career.
