Complete Results: Day One

Cleveland State jumped out to an early lead at the 2006 Horizon League Swimming & Diving Championships on Wednesday, using strong performances by the diving squad and distance swimmer Bjorn Schantz to compile a 47 point lead over second place UIC.

Sophomore diver Chris Dalman claimed his first Horizon League title on the 1-meter board, scoring 356.55 points in the final to edge teammate and event favorite Thatcher Carr (349.65). CSU captured all three top spots as sophomore Dan Baiko finished third with a score of 275.45.

Schantz captured the title in the 1,000 freestyle to add to the Viking team lead. Schantz beat out his own League-best regular season time of 9:23.19 to win the event, touching the wall in 9:17.93. Wright State's Scott Lang (9:29.19), Butler's Raj Duggal (9:29.85). Wright State's William Ehresman (9:30.26) and UW-Milwaukee's Robby Leibold (9:30.92) rounded out the top five.

The other two events on the men's side for the evening included both the 200 free and 200 medley relays. The UIC team of Adan Jimenez, Stefan Staev, Kris Simos and Blake Booher set a championship record with a time of 1:30.77 in the 200 medley relay, while Wright State (Elvis Cirikovic, Zach Fisher, Rafael Candido and Casey Heinbaugh) captured the 200 free relay crown with a time of 1:21.38.

On the women's side, Catalina Martinez of Wright State captured her second consecutive Horizon League title in the 1,000 freestyle with a 10:19.31 finish. UW-Green Bay's Molly Cox (10:19.80), Wright State's Tina Pandza (10:24.89) and Kristi Fox (10:29.79) and UIC's Laura Martensen (10:34.81) rounded out the top five.

 UW-Green Bay captured both relay wins on the night, with Kate Reibe, Allison Kreb, Jenna Smith and Kelsey Hausken beating out Wright State for the title in the 200 medley relay. Hausken joined Kristin Carlson, Danielle DeGrand and Dana Doute to win the 200 free relay over UW-Milwaukee.
