Horizon League Co-Male Swimming & Diving Athletes of the Week

 

Elvis Cirikovic of Wright State and Thatcher Carr of Cleveland State have been selected the Horizon League Co-Men's Swimming and Diving Athletes of the Week for Feb. 8.

 

Elvis Cirikovic

Wright State, Junior, Ljublijana, Slovenia

Cirikovic led the Raiders over the Vikings on Friday night by swimming team best in the 50 and 100-yard freestyle in winning the events with times of 20.93 and 45.67.  The 100 time is the best in the Horizon League this season.  He was also a part of the 400 freestyle relay team that set a team best in the season in defeating CSU by .37 of a second to help the Raiders end up 9-2 on the season.

 

Thatcher Carr

Cleveland State, Senior, Russell, Ohio

Carr set the school- and Busbey Natatorium-record for one-meter diving (six dives) against UIC with a 410.93.  He took first in all four of his events on the weekend, including a 409.95 three-meter score against the Flames. Both scores are league bests.

 

 

Horizon League Female Swimming & Diving Athlete of the Week

 

Tina Pandza of Wright State has been selected the Horizon League Women's Swimming and Diving Athlete of the Week for Feb. 8.

Wright State, Sophomore, Velenje, Slovenia 

Pandza helped the Raiders to victories over Cleveland State and Youngstown State on Friday by winning the 200 and 500-yard freestyle races in team and season-best times of 1:55.67 and 5:07.48.  It also helped the team reach a 7-4 record in dual meets on the season.

Blake Booher

UIC, Sophomore, Barrington, Ill.

Saving his best for last, Booher closed out the regular season with a pair of impressive sprint-freestyle performances at Cleveland State this past Saturday. The sophomore speedster swam a career-best 20.77 in the 50-yard freestyle to dominate the event, then went on to take second in the 100-yard freestyle with a season-best 46.43, just .02 behind teammate LeRoy Stevens. Booher then capped off his stellar showing with a zooming 19.89 split in the UIC's victorious 200 free relay. 

 

Phil Zumstein

UW-Green Bay, Sophomore, Mundelein, Ill.

Zumstein qualified for the NCAA Zone diving meet with his 313.35 total in the one-meter event on Saturday against in-state foe UW-Milwaukee.

 

Michael Belting

UW-Milwaukee, Senior, Owantonna, Minn.

Belting picked up a pair of wins in UWM's dual meet with UW-Green Bay on Saturday. He opened the night with a first-place showing in the 1000 free, as he finished in 9:50.19. In the next event, he placed second in the 200 free with a time of 1:49.70. Belting's evening was capped off when he touched the wall in the 500 free in 4:44.18 for the win.

Samantha Jones

Cleveland State, Senior, Pietermaritzburg, South Africa

Jones swam to a win in the 200 IM against Wright State and Youngstown State with a time of 2:11.15.  She also picked up a second-place showing in the 500 free (5:11.50) and anchored the winning 400 free relay team (3:38.52). Against UIC the following day, she tallied wins in the 100 fly (58.77), 100 back (50.78) and led off the winning 200 medley relay (1:49.96).

 

Sarah Economides

UIC, Sophomore, Downers Grove, Ill.

Economides continued her 2005 duties as the Flames leading diver by turning in a career-best 278.85 on the one-meter board, qualifying her for NCAA Zone competition in the event and helping the Flames earn an upset road win over Cleveland State on Saturday. Economides wrapped her second first-place finish of the day with a 234.23 on the three-meter board.

 

Abby Mayer

UW-Green Bay, Senior, Monroe, Wis.

Mayer broke the pool record for the women's 200 individual medley with a time of 2:11.34 on Saturday against in-state foe UW-Milwaukee. Mayer also posted a win in the 100 freestyle in 54.47.

 

Crystal Szymanski

UW-Milwaukee, Sophomore, Greenfield, Wis.

Szymanski won the three-meter diving event and took second from the one-meter board event during Milwaukee's dual meet with UW-Green Bay. She scored 246.45 points in winning the three-meter event, while being edged by a teammate for top honors in the one-meter with 248.55, just 1.87 points off the top score.

 

Erin Carter

Youngstown State, Senior, Fayetteville, Ark.

Carter won the 200 IM in a time of 2:15.22 and the 100 back in a season-best time of 1:02.17 on Saturday against California (Pa.). She also swam the butterfly leg of the winning 200 medley relay squad.
