Horizon League Male Swimming & Diving Athlete of the Week

 

Bjorn Schantz

Cleveland State, Sophomore, Loddekopinge, Sweden

Bjorn Schantz of Cleveland State has been selected the Horizon League Men's Swimming and Diving Athlete of the Week for Nov. 16.

 

Schantz swam to Cleveland State's only win against Eastern Michigan on Friday Nov. 12, posting a 4:34.60 in the 500 freestyle.  He also placed second in the 1,000 freestyle (9:32.93).  He scored a win in the 200 freestyle (1:42.51) at the City College Meet on Monday (Nov. 15) at Busbey Natatorium.

 

Horizon League Female Swimming & Diving Athlete of the Week

 

Marianne Lionell

Cleveland State, Sophomore, Sodertalje, Sweden

Marianne Lionell of Cleveland State has been selected the Horizon League Women's Swimming and Diving Athlete of the Week for Nov. 16.

 

Lionell won three events in helping the Vikings go 3-0 in the City College Meet at Busbey Natatorium Monday (Nov. 15), winning the 50 freestyle (24.31), 100 freestyle (53.00) and the 100 breaststroke (1:06.15). Her 100 freestyle time was a team-best this season.  She also picked up wins in the 50 freestyle (24.55) and 200 breaststroke (2:24.96) at Eastern Michigan on Friday (Nov. 12).

 

Other Top Male Horizon League Performers - Nov. 16

 

Jason Brozek

Butler, Sophomore, Great Bend, Kan.

Brozek posted a first-place finish in the 200-yard breaststroke Sunday, getting to the wall with a time of 2:13.64. Brozek posted a second-place finish in the 200-yard backstroke (2:05.06) in Saturday's meet. 

 

Edi Georg

UIC, Sophomore, Naperville, Ill.

In a double dual meet full of highlights for the Flames, Georg chipped in clutch performances in picking up two individual event wins and swam the leadoff leg of UIC's victorious 400 medley relay on Saturday against Butler and Lindenwood. The sophomore, coming off surgery to repair a torn meniscus, turned in his first two-win day by taking first in the 1000 freestyle with a 10:25.10, winning by over three seconds with his season-best mark, and swimming a victorious 200 backstroke in 2:01.08. 

 

Phil Zumstein

UW-Green Bay, Sophomore, Mundelein, Ill.

Zumstein qualified for the NCAA Zone diving championship meet with a total of 290.35 in the three-meter competition in a 142-101 Phoenix victory over visiting North Dakota on Nov. 12.

 

Other Top Female Horizon League Performers - Nov. 16

 

Jesse Levknecht

Butler, Senior, Ada, Mich.

Levknecht, fresh off a strong performance the night before, won the 200-yard butterfly with a time of 2:14.99 Saturday afternoon. On Friday, the Ada, Mich., native captured the 100-yard butterfly in 1:01.15. Levknecht was the runner-up in the 200-yard butterfly, as her time of 2:15.15 was just more than two seconds off the winning pace. The senior's time of 2:20.68 was good enough for third in the 200-yard individual medley.

 

Andrea Giczewski

UIC, Freshman, Livonia, Mich.

During a balanced effort that saw seven different swimmers on the UIC women's team take first place against Butler and Lindenwood, Giczewski stood out with a win in the 200 backstroke, a close second-place performance and a huge role in UIC's 400 medley relay victory. The rookie  Giczewski set the tone with a strong 100 backstroke leadoff in the opening 400 medley relay, then went on to take the 200 backstroke in 2:14.19. Giczewski was then edged out in her bid for another first-place finish by teammate Alicia Perry in the 200 IM, with the freshman swimming a 2:19.57 that qualified for second.     

 

Abby Mayer

UW-Green Bay, Senior, Monroe, Wis.

Mayer was a three-time winner with victories in the 100 backstroke (1:01.77), 100 freestyle (56.04) and 200 individual medley 2:14.60) in a 165-98 Green Bay victory at Valparaiso on Nov. 13.
