INDIANAPOLIS – Horizon League women’s soccer teams went a combined 4-1-2 on Sunday, with Wright State, Valparaiso, Green Bay and Loyola all claiming victories on the afternoon.
Wright State 4, IUPUI 1
Trailing 1-0 at the half, Wright State scored four unanswered goals in the second half to claim a dominant 4-1 victory over host IUPUI.
Wright State (3-1-3) knotted the match in the 66th minute, when Ashley Miltko tallied the first of her two goals, finding the back of the net from 12 yards out on the left side. Ini Umotong, who assisted on Miltko’s first goal, notched the game-winner three minutes later, putting in a rebound of her own shot.
Pouring it on, Emilie Fillion made it 3-1 just 36 seconds later, rebounding in her own shot as well. Miltko then rounded out the scoring with her second goal of the day and third of the season at the 70:18 mark as the sophomore connected on a shot from the left wing. Fillion was credited with the assist, her second of the year.
For the match, the Raiders outshot IUPUI 29-10, including 18-4 after halftime, and had 11 corner kicks compared to just two for the Jaguars.
Valparaiso 3, Bowling Green 0
Three second-half goals carried Valparaiso to a 3-0 blanking of visiting Bowling Green at Eastgate Field. For the first time in program history, the Crusaders are unbeaten through its first five home matches of the year.
Valparaiso (4-2-1) and Bowling Green waited out a 56-minute delay for lightning between halves before the Crusaders came out and dominated the second half.
The Crusaders would take the lead in the 54th minute on a set play in its offensive end. Abby Kenyon, who started the second half in her first appearance of the season, took the ball on the touch line and unleashed one of her flip throw-ins, unleashing it long and into the center of the box. Sarrah Ludwig was there to get up above the pack and head it into the back of the net for a 1-0 Crusader lead.
Valparaiso added a pair of goals on corner kicks within the final 10 minutes. In the 81st, Tara Ellis took a corner and placed it in the center of the six-yard box, where Janine Lytle headed it home for the insurance tally. Less than three minutes later, Ellis put another corner deep into the box and Lytle’s header attempt was saved by BGSU goalkeeper Becca Ison. However, the rebound came right to the foot of Jordyn Ryfiak, who easily put it away to cap the scoring.
Valpo ended the day out-shooting BGSU, 15-8, and boasted six corner kicks to the Falcons’ five. Kristen Manski made a pair of saves to earn the shutout for the Crusaders, the 16th clean sheet of her career.
Green Bay 3, South Dakota 1
Three different players scored as Green Bay completed a home sweep by knocking off visiting South Dakota, 3-1, at Aldo Santaga Stadium.
Green Bay (3-4-0) got off to a slow start on Sunday, falling behind in the 11th minute after a goal from South Dakota’s Jenny Teslow.
However, Emily Friedl scored the equalizer in the 22nd minute, beating the keeper from 15 yards out to the far post. Megan Braatz assisted on the tally, which seemed to jumpstart the Phoenix.
After the teams played scoreless soccer for the next 45 minutes, it was Hannah Kernan who picked up the eventual game-winning goal, sending in a leaping header to convert a cross from Hekla Palmadottir.
The Phoenix scored an insurance goal with just under 10 minutes to play, with Friedl again playing an important part. The sophomore beat two defenders to create a 2-on-1 with the keeper. Friedl slid a pass to Heidi Hartmann, who scored from in close for an 81st minute goal.
Keeper Katy Pilarzyk made four saves in the win for the Phoenix, who outshot South Dakota 10-7 in the contest.
Loyola 2, Western Michigan 1 (OT)
Playing its second overtime game of the weekend, Loyola again found a way for the golden goal, knocking off Western Michigan, 2-1.
After a scoreless second half, Monica Gonyo made two key saves in overtime for Loyola (3-4-0) before the Crusaders capitalized on a Western Michigan turnover. Kristin Papierski then dribbled through two defenders before placing a cross to Monika Lee, who tapped the ball into the wide-open goal.
In the first half, it was Loyola getting on the board first, as Ana Claudia Michelini booted home a penalty kick in the 33rd minute.
However, Western Michigan knotted the match five minutes later. The teams would play nearly 55 minutes before Lee’s game-winner.
Loyola overcame a 17-3 deficit in shots, with Gonyo making five saves.
Detroit 1, Ball State 1 (2OT)
Opening the Outrigger Hotels and Resorts Soccer Classic early Sunday morning, Detroit played Ball State to a 1-1 draw on the campus of the University of Hawaii.
Separated by just 238 miles but playing nearly 5,000 miles from home, Detroit (2-3-1) fell behind early as Ball State broke the ice off the foot of Jasmine Moses. The remainder of the first half would not see another goal and the teams would head into the break with Ball State up, 1-0.
Detroit got on the board in the second half at 61:25 as Rebekah Dornbos netted tied the game 1-1. On a set piece, Sarah Dzuris played the ball into Alyssa Riley, who passed it to Dornbos. Dornbos’ shot went in the lower right hand corner of the net making it a 1-1 game.
The second half saw UDM try and push for the game-winner taking four shots, three on goal compared to just one shot from the Cardinals. A combined three shots total from both teams in two overtime periods resulted in the 1-1 draw.
Goalkeeper Nora Abolins made four saves in the effort for the Titans.
Niagara 2, Youngstown State 1 (OT)
Youngstown State saw its four-match winning streak snapped in overtime, as Niagara took a 2-1 victory in overtime at Stambaugh Stadium.
With just 48 seconds left before halftime, Youngstown State (4-1-0) freshman Katie Hohmann found the back of the net after receiving and header from Jade Flory and a long direct kick from Katir Peterlin to take a 1-0 lead at the intermission.
Niagara knotted the match up at the match at 1-1 with 21 minutes left when Julianne Viviano's header off a corner kick went into the right top corner of the goal.
In the extra period, Niagara Rachel Garvey slipped past the YSU defenders and scored the game-winning goal just 3:38 into overtime.
For the match, the Guins outshot the Purple Eagles, 17-13, but did not have a shot in the overtime period.
Ohio 2, Cleveland State 1
Cleveland State was quick to equalize on the road at Ohio, but a goal in the 62nd minute sent the host Bobcats past the Vikings, 2-1.
Cleveland State (2-5-0) would fall behind 9:02 into the match, but quickly worked to tie the match, coming through 1:56 after Ohio’s goal. Jackie Kurgan found Vickie Havas, who knotted the equalizer.
The contest would stay knotted at 1-1 until the 62nd minute when the Bobcats took advantage of winning a corner kick. Cat Rogers sent the corner into the box where it was headed by Annie Beard before finally being knocked into the back of the net by Harris for her second goal of the game.
The Vikings had a chance late to tie it, but a shot by Taylor Vidovic in the 85th minute was saved.
