Horizon League Tennis Championships: Day 1

INDIANAPOLIS - Women's Tennis
The 2008 Horizon League Tennis Championship got underway Friday afternoon with women's seeds #4 through #9 taking the courts at North Central High School.
No. 4 Cleveland State University defeated No. 9 Valparaiso University 4-0 in the first completed match of the day. Then No. 6 University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee held off No. 7 Wright State University, defeating them 4-2 after the Raiders won at both No. 1 and No. 2 singles. The most exciting match of the afternoon came as No. 8 University of Wisconsin-Green Bay upset No. 5 Youngstown State University 4-3. The No. 1 singles match between Green Bay's Emily Lawent and Youngstown State's Anna Volkova was the deciding match, as Lawent came away with the 6-2, 6-3 victory to clinch the match for the Phoenix.
Tomorrow's women's matches begin at approximately 10 a.m. as Cleveland State will take on Green Bay and Milwaukee will meet #3 University of Detroit Mercy. In the consolation bracket, Valparaiso will meet Youngstown State, and Wright State will face the winner of that match at 4 p.m. Men's first round action begins tomorrow morning at 8 a.m.
