INDIANAPOLIS – Green Bay’s Kayla Tetschlag has been named Horizon League Female Scholar-Athlete of the Month and Butler’s Matt Howard is the Male Scholar-Athlete for the month of December.

Tetschlag, a senior from Sheboygan, Wis., scored her 1,000th career point closing off the 2010 year on Dec. 31st in the 69-62 win over Detroit.  She opened Horizon League play with back-to-back double-doubles, earning her Women’s Basketball Player of the Week and registered a total of four double-doubles throughout seven games in December. Tetschlag also led the Phoenix in rebounding averaging 7.2 boards per contest.

A business administration major, Tetschlag holds a 3.84 Grade Point Average (GPA) and earned a 4.00 GPA in the fall semester. She also made the Dean’s list last semester.

Howard, a senior from Connersville, Ind., finished December as the second-leading scorer and rebounder in the Horizon League. He was named the most valuable player at the Diamond Head Classic in Hawaii while also earning two Horizon League Men’s Basketball Player of the Week honors (Dec. 20 and 27). In the month, he averaged 19.3 points and moved into eighth place on Butler’s all-time scoring list with 1,566 career points.

A finance major, Howard holds a 3.77 cumulative GPA and earned a 4.00 GPA in the fall semester. He is a two-time Academic All-American (2009-10 and 2008-09) and was named ESPN The Magazine/CoSIDA Academic All-District V. While competing in the 2010 NCAA Men’s Basketball Final Four, Howard received the NCAA “Elite 88” Award, given to the participating athlete with the highest GPA.

The Horizon League instituted the Scholar-Athlete of the Month awards as a way to recognize outstanding academic and athletic achievements. To be eligible for the honor, the student-athlete must maintain a cumulative grade-point average of 3.20 or better (on a 4.00 scale), have completed at least one year at the member institution, passed 24 semester or 36 quarter hours and perform well during the month’s competition. Winners are selected by the League’s faculty athletics representatives, from nominations provided by sports information directors.
