Horizon League Indoor Track & Field Athletes of the Week

 

Edmund Blankson

Loyola, So., Edwardsville, Ill.

Blankson captured 60 and 200-meter event titles to lead the Loyola men's team at the Notre Dame  Invitational last weekend. He placed first in the 60m with a season-best time of 7.08 and broke his own school record in the 200m at a time of 21.86, which also marks as the top time in the Horizon League this season.

 

Stephanie Jarvis

Youngstown State, Fr., Canfield, Ohio

Jarvis shattered her own school record by 11 inches in the pole vault with a mark of 10 feet, 11 3/4 inches Friday night at the Kangaroo Invitational.  The mark is also tops in the Horizon League this season, outdistancing second place by nearly five inches.

Scott Overall

Butler, Sr., Twickenham, U.K.

Overall ran the fastest indoor mile in Butler track and field history and flirted with a four-minute mile, while placing runner-up at the Notre Dame Invitational.  He finished the race in 4:00.53, smashing the previous Butler indoor mile record of 4:03.63 set by Andrew Sherman last spring. Overall, who lost the race to Notre Dame All-American Kurt Benninger, earned provisional NCAA qualification with his effort.

 

Nate Weiland

UW-Milwaukee, Sr., Waunakee, Wis.

 Weiland led the Panthers at the Edmonds Cup, taking second in the 3000m. He completed the event in 8:35.33 to narrowly miss first place by less than a second. Weiland's time is the second-best in the Horizon League this season for the 3000m.

 

Damian Wright

Youngstown State, Sr., Plantation, Fla.

Wright placed second in the 200m with a personal-best time of 22.47 and fifth in the 60m with a time of 7.12 on Friday at the Kangaroo Invitational. His time in the 200m moved him into seventh place on YSU's all-time list.

 

Terrell Williams

UIC, So., Rock Island, Ill.

Williams had a strong showing at the Wisconsin Elite Invite on Saturday, placing seventh in both the 60-meter hurdles (8.81) and seventh in the pole vault (4.17m).

 

Melvin Cross

Detroit, Jr., Lathrup Village, Mich.

Cross finished sixth in weight throw with a throw of 15.55 meters (51 feet 0.25 inches), a new personal record and the fifth best throw by a Titan male all-time. The throw marked only the sixth time a Titan has thrown for over 50 feet and is good for seventh in the Horizon League this season.

 

Tenia Fisher

UW-Milwaukee, Sr., Milwaukee, Wis.

 Fisher broke the school record in the 600m Saturday at the Edmonds Cup, crossing the line in 1:33.56 to take second, just 0.10 seconds off the lead runner. Fisher now holds the indoor school marks for the 400m, 600m and 800m.

 

Andrea Karl

Detroit, Sr., Casco City, Mich.

Karl finished second in the mile race at the Michigan Intercollegiate with a time of 4:55.22, losing to Michigan's All-America runner Rebecca Walter by only .08. It was a personal record for Karl and the second best mile time by a Titan female all-time and only the fourth sub 5 minute mile by a Titan female.

 

Cortney Mann

Wright State, So., Columbus, Ohio

Mann took sixth at the Findlay Classic in the weight throw on Saturday with a toss of 15.10 meters.  The mark is the fifth-best in the Horizon League this season.

 

Jenny Homan

Butler, So., Cincinnati, Ohio

Homan placed runner-up in the women's 5,000 meter run at the Indiana Open.  She covered the distance in 20:10.22, while turning in the top performance for Butler's women's team.

 

Inshirah Grimes

Loyola, Sr., Shaker Heights, Ohio

In her first time competing in the long jump this season, Grimes earned a second-place finish at the Notre Dame Invitational last weekend. She recorded a season-best leap of 16-11.25, which placed her in a tie for fifth place in LU indoor annals in the event.

 

Sara O'Mara

UIC, Sr., Hinsdale, Ill.

O'Mara had her best showing of the 2006 season over the weekend at the Wisconsin Elite Invite with sixth-place finishes in both the shot put (12.76m) and the weight throw (14.73m) at the event.
