Men earn third consecutive crown, while women beat out defending champion Youngstown State.

The University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee swept the team titles at the 2006 Horizon League Indoor Track & Field Championships in Kent, Ohio on Sunday, with both the men's and women's team holding off host Youngstown State University for the championship.

On the men's side, UWM finished with a total of 164 points, ahead of YSU at 132.  The University of Illinois at Chicago finished third at 82, followed by Loyola University Chicago at 76, Butler University at 53 and the University of Detroit Mercy with 47.

On the women's side, UW-Milwaukee recorded 172 points on the weekend, 21 ahead of YSU.  Loyola finished in third with 73.5, while UIC came in fourth with 56.5.  Detroit (47), Butler (44) and Weight State University (11) rounded out the field.

Panthers lead with five championship specialty awards

UIC, Youngstown and Butler also boast honorees

In addition to the earning both team honors, the Panthers also boasted five post-championship awards, with Adam Schleis, Jenni Saarinen and Tenia Fisher all being recognized.

Schleis finished fourth in the triple jump and second in the long jump to earn Men's Field Newcomer of the Year honors while Women's Field Newcomer honors went to Jenni Saarinen, the 2006 Horizon League Indoor Pentathlon Champion.  Fisher finished first in both the 400 and 800m races and was a part of the winning 4 x 400 relay team to earn Outstanding Running Performer honors.

UWM head coach Pete Corfeld was selected as both men's and women's Coach of the Year.

Second-place finisher Youngstown State and UIC also claimed multiple individual awards after the meet. YSU freshman Katie Betts was named the Women's Running Newcomer of the Year after setting a meet record in the 200m dash and finishing third in the 60 m race, and Jarrod Davis earned Men's Outstanding Field Performer honors after finishing first in the weight throw with an NCAA provisional qualifying distance of 19.01m and second in the shot put.

Dorian Hayes and Idara Essien of UIC also win individual honors, as Hayes was awarded Men's Running Newcomer of the Year after setting a meet record in the 60m dash and finishing second in the long jump.  Essien set a meet record in the triple jump to earn Outstanding Field Performer, recoding a distance of 12.36 meters.

In addition, Butler's Scott Overall was named Outstanding Men's Running performer after setting a meet record of 2:24.79 in the 1000 m distance event. He also anchored Butler's first-place Distance Medley Relay.

Multiple Records Set at 2006 Championships

Eight Horizon League records fell at the 2006 Indoor Track & Field Championships, including one of the longest-standing League records for the sport.

UW-Milwaukee's Tenia Fisher recorded a time of 55.69 in the 400m dash on Sunday to win the Horizon League championship. Her time officially erased Notre Dame's Erica Peterson from the record book, wiping out Peterson's record of 55.75, set back in 1993.  Fisher's performance was one of four record-setting feats for the Panthers, as teammate Timeka Walker set a new record in the 200m with a time of 24.81, Joy VanLaanen set a mark of 11 -1.75 in the pole vault and the 4x400 relay team crossed the line in a time of 3:52.35 to beat the time of 3:54.93 set by Youngstown State just last year.

UIC's Idara Essien also set a new Horizon League record, marking a distance of 12.36m in the long jump.

On the men's side, Running Newcomer of the Meet Dorian Hayes of UIC set a new mark in the 60m dash, crossing the line with a time of 6.90.  Butler's Scott Overall finished the 1000m with a record time of 2:24.79 and Youngstown State's Jarrod Davis threw a distance of 19.01m in the weight throw for both a League record and NCAA provisional qualification.
