Male Athlete of the Week

 

Aaron Merrill

Youngstown State

So., Leetonia, Ohio

Merrill broke the school record in the shot put with a mark of 54'1.5"  as YSU's men's squad competed at the Baldwin Wallace Mid-January Meet on Friday. His throw topped Jarrod Davis' mark of 53'11.25" that was set at the 2006 Horizon League Championship. His throw currently tops the Horizon League performance charts. Merrill also posted a personal-best mark of 47-5 3/4 in the weight throw.

 

Female Athlete of the Week

 

Beth Zimmerman

UW-Milwaukee

So., Waterford, Wis.

For the second-straight meet, Zimmerman won both the long and triple jumps and added a second-place finish in the 200-meter dash. In the triple jump, she set a school record with her leap of 38'2.5". She also sprung into UWM's top-10 long jump list with her first-place mark of 18'1.5", tying the 10th-best jump in school history. Zimmerman also ran a :26.82 in the 200 meters.

Alex Sutphen

UIC

So., Hoffman Estates, Ill.

Sutphen posted his first collegiate individual event victory on Saturday, Jan. 20 at the Redbird Indoor Invitational, taking top honors in the 3,000-meter race. The sophomore posted a career-best time of 8:56.01, bettering his previous best of 8:57.32 set last season at the Horizon League Indoor Championships.

 

Melvin Cross

Detroit

Sr., Lathrup Village, Mich.

Cross won the weight throw event at the Don Wright Team Challenge with a mark of 52'1.75". The distance was a personal best as well as a new meet record.

 

Edmund Blankson

Loyola

Jr., Glen Carbon, Ill.

Blankson won the 300-meter dash title at the Notre Dame Indoor Opener with a time of :35.07.  He also took second-place in the 60-meter dash, crossing the line at :7.13.

 

Larry Ehrhorn

UW-Milwaukee

Jr., Madison, Wis.

Ehrhorn won both throwing events for the Panthers at the UW-Whitewater Invitational. He narrowly missed the school record in winning the weight throw, as his throw of 55'10.25" missed the mark by one inch and now stands second in school history. He also took top honors in the shot put with a personal-best toss of 51'3.75".

Tiffany Brigham

Wright State

Fr., Springfield, Ohio

Brigham broke her own school-record at the Indiana Team Classic this past weekend, posting a time of :25.81 in the 200-meter dash. Tiffany also put up a time of :8.01 in the 60-meter dash.

 

Lisa Petty

UIC

Sr., Brookfield, Ill.

Petty gave the UIC women's team its best finish at the Redbird Indoor Invitational on Saturday, Jan. 20, taking third in the 3,000-meter race with a time of 10:55.46.

 

Laura Nowicki

Detroit

So., Shelby Township, Mich.

Nowicki won the pole vault event at the Don Wright Team Challenge, clearing 9'10".

 

Marcia Faustin

Loyola

Sr., Orland Park, Ill.

Faustin turned in Loyola's lone top-three finish in the high jump at the Notre Dame Indoor Opener. Faustin's mark of 5'6" gave her third place in the event.
