INDIANAPOLIS -- Green Bay senior Julie Wojta is the Horizon League Women’s Basketball Player of the Week, for the period from Dec. 26-Jan. 1, after helping the Phoenix to a pair of victories during the first week of conference play.
On Thursday night, Wojta led all scorers with 14 points and pulled down a career-high 15 rebounds as No. 14/18 Green Bay defeated UIC, 80-63, to open its 2011-12 league schedule with a victory. The double-double is Wojta’s sixth of the season and ties her with Jasmine Bailey of UIC for the most of any Horizon League player. Wojta also had four of Green Bay’s six steals in the game, two assists and one blocked shot.
Saturday, Wojta had a game-high 15 points as the Phoenix took down Loyola, 76-49. Wojta had a team-high four steals, while also tying for team-high honors with eight rebounds. She rounded out her night with four assists as the Phoenix as a team had 19 assists on their 25 field goals.
For the season, Wojta ranks second in the conference in points (19.7), rebounds (10.2) and field goal percentage (55.8). She tops the league in steals, averaging 3.5 per contest.
Green Bay hits the road this week, facing Milwaukee on Saturday with game time scheduled for 1:30 p.m. ET.
Other Top Performers for the Week:
Kim Demmings, Wright State (Fr., G) - Demmings averaged 16.0 points, 7.0 rebounds and 4.0 assists in the Raiders’ two victories last week. She hit the game-winning shot with 4.7 seconds left in WSU’s 48-47 win over Butler.
Shareta Brown, Detroit (Fr., F) - Brown averaged 15.5 points and 8.5 rebounds as Detroit opened league play with a 2-0 record. Brown had her fifth double-double of the year in Thursday night’s 72-60 win over Butler.
Brandi Brown, Youngstown State (Jr., F) - Brown had 23 points and 12 rebounds as Youngstown State snapped a nine-game skid to Cleveland State. Earlier in the week, she had 18 rebounds, tied for the most by a conference player this season, against Stony Brook.
Jasmine Bailey, UIC (Sr., G/F) - Bailey had a double-double in both of UIC’s games last week. She had 18 points and 10 rebounds at Green Bay and 20 points and 10 rebounds at Milwaukee.
Shalonda Winton, Cleveland State (Jr., F) - Winton had 17 points and 13 rebounds in CSU’s loss at Youngstown State Saturday.
Courtney Lindfors, Milwaukee (Jr., F) - Lindfors averaged 15.0 points and 6.0 rebounds per game in UWM’s first two conference games. She had 23 points on Thursday night against Loyola.
