INDIANAPOLIS -- Youngstown State senior Karla Everhart and Butler University sophomore Jalesa Lee have been named Horizon League Volleyball Players of the Week for the period of Sept. 8-14.
A native of Elyria, Ohio, Everhart earns Offensive Player of the Week accolades after dishing out a Horizon League-best 10.00 assists per game during four matches last week. She also contributed 15 kills and 36 digs from the setter position.
Everhart has registered 30+ assists in five straight matches, and leads the league in that category with 9.63 per game. She has also climbed to fourth all-time at Youngstown State with 2,730 career assists.
Everhart helped YSU to a 3-1 week, which included wins over Robert Morris (25-20, 25-19, 25-20), Saint Peter's College (25-16, 25-15, 25-10) and West Virginia (25-18, 25-15, 23-25, 26-24). At 7-3, the Penguins are off to their best 10-match start since 2005.
A native of Indianapolis, Lee grabs Defensive Player of the Week honors after collecting a Horizon League-high 23 blocks during four matches last week. She also recorded 23 kills and a .442 attack percentage from the middle blocker position.
Lee turned in a career-best 10 block assists on Friday against Maryland-Eastern Shore. She then added six blocks on Friday vs. Maine and six more on Saturday against Buffalo, guiding the Bulldogs to a Buffalo Ramada Invitational Championship.
Lee has helped Butler to nine consecutive victories overall, including last week's decisions over Indiana State (15-25, 25-15, 25-12, 25-22), Maryland-Eastern Shore (22-25, 25-20, 23-25, 25-17, 15-10), Maine (27-25, 25-23, 25-23) and Buffalo (22-25, 25-21, 25-17, 25-19).
At 10-1, the Bulldogs are off to their best 11-match start since 1997. The nine-match winning streak is also the program's longest since 1997.
Butler returns to action on Tuesday with a 6 p.m. home match against IUPUI. Youngstown State is off until Friday when it opens league play with a 7 p.m. home tilt vs. UIC.
