2011 Horizon League Men's Soccer Tournament Bracket
Shutouts by Peter McKeown and Ryan Wehking lifted Loyola and Green Bay into the semifinals of the Horizon League Men's Soccer Tournament on Tuesday, with McKeown's Loyola Ramblers knocking off Cleveland State, 1-0, while the Green Bay Phoenix controlled their match in a 2-0 victory over UIC.
At Krenzler Field, No. 6 Loyola (6-11-1) picked up the game-winning goal 33 minutes into the match, as Reed Patterson converted a pass from Kyle Spoo after a throw-in from James Howe. Patterson's header held up the rest of the way, as McKeown made two saves on the night to preserve the shutout.
On the night, third-seeded Cleveland State finished with the advantage in shots (8-6) and corner kicks (7-1).
Loyola returns to the League semifinals for the second straight year, where the Ramblers will meet No. 1 seed Valparaiso in the second semifinal match on Friday.
Green Bay (11-6-1) fills out the top half of the bracket after a 2-0 win against UIC (9-7-3). The Phoenix will take on No. 2 seed Wright State at 5 p.m. ET on Friday from Brown Field at Valparaiso in the League semifinals. 2009 League champions and 2010 runners-up, Green Bay went ahead in the first half when Luke Goodnetter collected his third tally of the season.
Just 2:14 into the second half, Sam Krenzien gave the Phoenix a critical insurance goal, coming off a feed from Lawrence Talery.
The Phoenix had the better run of play through much of the night, tallying 20 shots on the night, five of which came on goal. Wehking denied all three UIC shots on frame.
