CHICAGO -- Loyola University Chicago was one of six colleges and universities to be recognized as a Presidential Awardee on the President’s Higher Education Community Service Honor Roll it was recently announced. In receiving this prestigious honor, Loyola was saluted for its commitment to community service and positive impact in the community.

Augsburg College, Rollins College, San Francisco State University, St. Mary’s University (Texas), and California State University Monterey Bay joined Loyola as 2011 Presidential Awardees.

Honorees are chosen based on a series of selection factors including scope and innovation of service projects, percentage of student participation in service activities, incentives for service, and the extent to which the school offers academic service-learning courses.

Loyola student-athletes give back to the community in a handful of ways as each team takes part in some sort of community service initiative during the course of an academic year. Continuing its tradition of being a very active member of the community, the Rambler women’s volleyball program raised over $1,200 for pancreatic cancer research in 2010.

In addition to the Presidential Awardee recognition, Loyola was named to the USA Today Top 20 Colleges Committed to Community Service.

Numerous other Rambler teams gave back to the community through service outings at Misericordia Heart of Mercy and by raising money for breast cancer research among many other activities. One of the platforms of the Horizon League, of which Loyola is a charter member, is a strong emphasis on community outreach.
