INDIANAPOLIS -- Loyola University Chicago golfer Sean Bidzinski and softball player Amy Solava have been named U.S. Army Horizon League Scholar-Athletes of the Week for the week ending April 5, League commissioner Jonathan B. LeCrone announced Thursday (April 9).

Bidzinski (Belvidere, Ill./Boylan Catholic), a senior, tied for fourth place at the Norm Bullock Collegiate Classic on April 5 in Celina, Ohio, to lead Loyola to a second-place team finish. His finish was a season best as he shot even-par 72 in both rounds, just one shy of his season-low 71 set in the fall.

In the classroom, Bidzinski carries a 3.93 grade-point average as a finance major at Loyola. He was voted to the ESPN The Magazine/CoSIDA Academic All-District V Second Team last spring and has been named to the Horizon League Academic Honor Roll. In addition, he is a member of Loyola's Student-Athlete Advisory Committee (SAAC).

Solava (New Lenox, Ill./Lincoln-Way Central), a junior, was 2-0 with a 1.50 earned-run average in 14 innings last week as Loyola went 2-1 as a team. She tossed a two-hitter in a 4-1 victory over Valparaiso University on April 4 and then scattered five hits in a complete-game 3-2 victory versus the Crusaders the next day.

An elementary education major, Solava owns a 3.93 grade-point average at Loyola. She was named to the Horizon League Softball All-Academic Team in 2008 and also was recognized as an NFCA All-America Scholar-Athlete. Solava also is a member of Loyola's SAAC.

The Horizon League instituted the U.S. Army Scholar-Athlete of the Week awards as a way to recognize outstanding academic and athletic achievement by its student-athletes. To be eligible for the honor, a student-athlete must maintain a cumulative grade-point average of 3.20 or better (on a 4.00 scale), have completed at least one year at the member institution, passed 24 semester or 36 quarter hours and perform well during the week's competition. Winners are selected by a group of League faculty athletic representatives, from nominations provided by sports information directors.
