Loyola's Gergen, Detroit's Kochanski Honored as U.S. Army Horizon League Scholar-Athletes of the Week

INDIANAPOLIS -- Loyola University Chicago men's golfer Dylan Gergen and University of Detroit Mercy women's soccer player Trina Kochanski have been named U.S. Army Horizon League Scholar-Athletes of the Week for the week ending Oct. 19, League commissioner Jonathan B. LeCrone announced Thursday (Oct. 23).


Gergen (St. Paul, Minn./Cretin-Derham Hall) placed fifth (72-68-75=215) at the IPFW Fall Classic Oct. 13-14 to help Loyola capture the team title in the six-team field that included three other Horizon League squads.


As an accounting major, Gergen carries a 3.6 grade-point average at Loyola. He helped the Ramblers men's golf team earn Loyola's President's Award for the top team grade-point average in 2007-08.


Kochanski (Royal Oak, Mich./Kimball) led Detroit to a 2-1 overall record with a pair of game-winning goals last week. She had a goal and an assist in the Titans' 3-0 victory over Indiana University-Purdue University Fort Wayne Oct. 14 and then scored in double-overtime to give Detroit a 1-0 road win at Wright State University Oct. 17.


In the classroom, Kochanski maintains a 3.879 grade-point average as an accounting major at Detroit.


The Horizon League instituted the U.S. Army Scholar-Athlete of the Week awards as a way to recognize outstanding academic and athletic achievement by its student-athletes. To be eligible for the honor, a student-athlete must maintain a cumulative grade-point average of 3.20 or better (on a 4.00 scale), have completed at least one year at the member institution, passed 24 semester or 36 quarter hours and perform well during the week's competition. Winners are selected by a group of League faculty athletic representatives, from nominations provided by sports information directors.
