INDIANAPOLIS – Basketball standouts Walt Gibler of Loyola and Kayla Tetschlag of Green Bay have been named the U.S. Army Horizon League Scholar-Athletes of the Month for December.

Gibler (Cincinnati, Ohio/St. Xavier), a sophomore forward, averaged 11.1 points and five rebounds off the bench in leading the Ramblers to a 7-1 record last month.  He scored a career-high 22 points in a win over SIU-Edwardsville and had 12 points in Loyola’s first victory at Bradley since 1984.

In the classroom, Gibler carries a 3.85 grade-point average as a psychology major.  He has earned the Don Izban Award, which is presented annually to the Loyola men’s basketball player with the highest grade-point average.

Tetschlag (Sheboygan, Wis./North), a junior guard/forward, averaged team-highs of 17.3 points and 7.8 rebounds per game during December, helping the Phoenix to a 6-0 record en route to the program’s first 12-0 start.  She scored 16 or more points in five of six games last month, including her first career double-double with 25 points and 14 rebounds in a win over Southern Illinois Dec. 28.

A business administration major, Tetschlag (pronounced TETCH-logg) owns a 3.73 grade-point average and has been named to the Horizon League Academic Honor Roll and the Green Bay Dean’s List during her career.

The Horizon League instituted the U.S. Army Scholar-Athlete of the Month awards as a way to recognize outstanding academic and athletic achievement by its student-athletes.  To be eligible for the honor, a student-athlete must maintain a cumulative grade-point average of 3.20 or better (on a 4.00 scale), have completed at least one year at the member institution, passed 24 semesters or 36 quarter hours and perform well during the month’s competition. Winners are selected by the League’s faculty athletics representatives, from nominations provided by sports information directors.
