Loyola's Jones named to <i>Soccer America</i> National

INDIANAPOLIS -- Loyola University Chicago freshman Alex Jones is quickly compiling an impressive r&eacute;sum&eacute;. The Rambler forward---who garnered Horizon League men's soccer Player of the Week honors earlier in the week---was named to the Soccer America National Team of the Week on Wednesday (Oct. 11).

Soccer America tabbed Jones to its weekly 11-member squad, honoring outstanding play during the previous seven days. "Team of the Week" has historically been recognized as one of the top honors available during the regular season.

Jones scored the match-winning goal in both of Loyola's victories last week, pushing the Ramblers to 4-0-0 in League play and a share of the top spot on the circuit standings. He hit the net in overtime to give Loyola a 1-0 triumph at Butler University on Tuesday (Oct. 3), and posted the only goal in a 1-0 shutout versus the University of Detroit Mercy on Friday (Oct. 6). He leads the team with six goals this season.

University of Notre Dame forward Joseph Lapira is the national Player of the Week after taking over the top spot on the NCAA scoring charts with 17 goals and 36 points. The rest of the "Team of the Week" includes forwards Nick Perera of UC Santa Barbara and O'Brian White of Connecticut, along with midfielders Eric Alexander of Indiana, Joe Germanese of Duke, Corey Lugger of Appalachian State and Galen Thompson of Stanford. On defense, New Mexico's Andrew Boyens and San Francisco's Rob Valentino were honored, along with George Mason goalkeeper Sean Kelley.

Jones and his Rambler teammates return to action Friday (Oct. 13), visiting UW-Green Bay in a match-up of the top two teams in the League standings. Both teams carry 4-0-0 loop ledgers into that showdown, with the Phoenix boasting a 10-3-0 overall record and a five-match winning streak, while Loyola has won nine of its last 11 outings to climb to 9-4-0 overall.
