Loyola's Kou Nets Seven Points as Canada Advances to 2005 FIBA World Championship

Chicago - Loyola University Chicago guard Majak Kou was perfect from the field yet again, this time hitting all three of his shots including one from long range, to help Canada to a 94-74 victory over the Dominican Republic last night at the Under 21 Tournament of the Americas. With the victory, Canada qualified for the 2005 FIBA Under 21 World Championships next August. This is the first Canadian team, either male or female, to qualify for an age specific FIBA World Championship.

Kou, who finished the game with seven points and has connected on all eight of his field goal attempts in the tournament, helped Canada race out to a 25-9 lead after one quarter of play and the Dominican Republic was unable to recover from that early deficit.

Canada wraps up round robin play at the Tournament of the Americas in Halifax, Nova Scotia tonight when it faces Argentina.

Loyola's Majak Kou to Compete for Canada at Under 21 Tournament of the Americas

Chicago - Loyola University Chicago guard Majak Kou has been selected to represent Canada on the Young Men's National Team which will compete at the Under 21 Tournament of the Americas in Halifax, Nova Scotia. The tournament runs from July 28 - Aug. 1.

Last month, Kou competed for Canada at the Global Games in Dallas, averaging 8.3 ppg, 2.8 rpg and 1.3 apg while shooting .571 (12 for 21) from the field and a sizzling .714 (5 for 7) from three-point range in four contests.

Canada will face the Bahamas (July 28), Dominican Republic (July 29) and Argentina (July 30) in round robin play at the Tournament of the Americas this week. The top three countries at the tournament will advance to the 2005 FIBA Under 21 World Championship in Mar del Plata, Argentina.

As a freshman at Loyola in 2003-04, the slender 6-foot-5 Kou averaged 7.9 ppg and was one of the team's top long-range shooters, burying 27 three-point field goals.
