INDIANAPOLIS -- Loyola University Chicago men's soccer player Will Martin and University of Wisconsin-Green Bay volleyball player Megan Elfering have been named U.S. Army Horizon League Scholar-Athletes of the Week for the week ending Oct. 5, League commissioner Jonathan B. LeCrone announced Friday (Oct. 10).

Martin (Cedar Rapids, Iowa/Xavier), a sophomore defender, helped Loyola extended its string of shutouts to three with blankings last week at Wright State University (1-0) and at home against Valparaiso University (2-0). The Ramblers have posted six shutouts already this fall after registering 10 a year ago.

As a biology major, Martin carries a perfect 4.0 grade-point average at Loyola. He helped the Ramblers earn a Team Academic Award from the NSCAA in 2007.

Elfering (Bristol, Wis./Westosha Central), a senior libero, led Green Bay to a pair of victories last week, including 30 digs in a 3-2 win over the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee on Oct. 3 that snapped a nine-match losing streak to the Panthers. She set Green Bay's career digs record in a sweep of the University of Illinois at Chicago on Sept. 30 and now has 1,563 for her career.

In the classroom, Elfering maintains a 3.347 grade-point average as an elementary education and human development major at Green Bay and has been named to the League's Academic Honor Roll and the UW-Green Bay Dean's List. She has helped the Phoenix earn an AVCA Team Academic Award in both 2007 and 2008.

The Horizon League instituted the U.S. Army Scholar-Athlete of the Week awards as a way to recognize outstanding academic and athletic achievement by its student-athletes. To be eligible for the honor, a student-athlete must maintain a cumulative grade-point average of 3.20 or better (on a 4.00 scale), have completed at least one year at the member institution, passed 24 semester or 36 quarter hours and perform well during the week's competition. Winners are selected by a group of League faculty athletic representatives, from nominations provided by sports information directors.
