INDIANAPOLIS - UIC outfielder Melinda Macias has been named the Horizon League Softball Batter of the Week, while Cleveland State hurler Amanda Macenko has earned Pitcher of the Week honors for the week ending March 21.
Macias batted 10-of-14 (.714) for the week as the Flames faced two top 25 programs in No. 25 Massachusetts and No. 20 Texas A&M in the San Diego State Tournament. The sophomore slugged 1.000, hitting four doubles in just five games. The Chino, Calif., native, earns her first career weekly accolade and UIC’s first of the season.
Macenko racked up a 7-0 record in eight appearances last week in the Rebel Games in Kissimmee, Fla. The two-time Horizon League Pitcher of the Year posted an ERA of 0.88, allowing 30 hits in 48 innings. She struck out 45 total batters and took part in four shutouts, throwing a one-hitter vs. Farleigh, a two-hitter vs. Lafayette and a three-hitter vs. Brown. The Brunswick, Ohio, native garners her second weekly honor of the season and the third for CSU.
