CHICAGO -- Wright State junior guard Julius Mays’ running, game-winning 3-point shot in overtime against Idaho on Dec. 20 is nominated for the GEICO Play of the Year, Intersport announced today. Each week for eight weeks, four incredible college basketball plays will be nominated as the GEICO Play of the Year. Each week’s winner will be determined by fan voting through the official Facebook page (facebook.com/BestofCollegeBasketball). The eight finalists will compete in a week-long competition to determine the GEICO Play of the Year. The winner will be announced during the GEICO Best of College Basketball special which airs March 25 at 1 p.m. ET. on CBS.

In addition to recognizing the season’s top plays, the one-hour CBS special will relive the season’s greatest moments, players and traditions. The show reviews the GEICO Best of 2012 Basketball Tour, an interactive fan experience that visits 10 marquee games throughout the basketball season.

Idaho’s Landon Tatum hit a miraculous half-court shot at the end of regulation to send this back-and-forth game into overtime, but Wright State would have the last laugh. With the Vandals leading 78-77 with only four seconds left, Mays took the ball and charged up court. Mays dribbled behind his back to create space, set his feet briefly and let it fly from beyond the arc. With clock reading zero Mays’ shot banked off the glass and in to give the Raiders the 80-78 victory. Mays’ game-winning buzzer-beater is competing against three other plays from week one, including an incredible one-handed block and steal by Florida’s Patric Young, a tip-dunk to beat the buzzer by Purdue’s Robbie Hummel and a monster jam by Georgia’s Kentavious Caldwell-Pope.

Indiana’s Christian Watford won week one for his game-winning 3-pointer against Kentucky.
