Megan Lukan to Compete in Rio Olympics

GREEN BAY, Wis. (WBAY) – In a little over a year, Megan Lukan transforms herself from an All-Horizon League point guard with the Green Bay Phoenix, to an Olympic rugby player for Canada.  Today, Canadian Rugby announced its’ 12 member team for the inaugural Olympic Sevens Tournament in the upcoming Rio games, and Lukan made the cut, fulfilling the goal she set for herself following her Phoenix career.

She was a four year starter for Green Bay, a tenacious defender and rebounder despite her size.  Her coaches and opponents always talked about her toughness.   And now she is succeeding in a very tough sport, which is no surprise to those who watched her play basketball.

The Barrie Ontario native played rugby in high school.  She returned to the sport following her stellar career with the Phoenix, essentially recruited by Canada’s national rugby program.  She made her international debut at the Dubai Sevens Tournament last December, and has scored 2 tries in her 16 matches.

Canada is the 3-seed for the Olympics, and will be in a pool with 4-seed England, 9-seed Brazil, and 10-seed Japan.
