Men’s Basketball Scoreboard (Jan. 10)
Detroit 101, Youngstown State 60

With road wins seemingly hard to come by in the Horizon League, it figured that Youngstown State would test Detroit at the Beeghly Center. Instead, the Titans routed the host Penguins, 101-60, on Thursday night.

The win was an early statement for Detroit (11-5, 3-0 Horizon), who won for the fifth straight game and just second time on the road this season. Youngstown State (9-7, 1-2 Horizon) allowed 100 points at home for the first time since Dec. 22, 1990.

After Detroit opened an early 13-7 lead, it was the Penguins who scored seven straight points, holding a 14-13 edge with 10:31 to play in the first half.

However, it was all Titans the rest of the way, as Evan Bruinsma matched Kendrick Perry’s three with one of his own to bring Detroit back in front, 16-14. Shawn Amiker’s layup was the lone YSU point during the 25-2 run that put the Titans up, 39-16, with 3:20 to play in the half.

Detroit took a 45-24 lead into the half, as Bruinsma had nine in the first half, with Jason Calliste adding 12.

Calliste would thwart any hopes Youngstown State had of a comeback to start the second half, getting a three-point play at the expense of Kendrick Perry, who picked up his fourth foul of the game on the whistle.

Calliste added a three-pointer after a Doug Anderson dunk as the Titans stretched the lead to 26 1:38 into the half.

The Titans lead would stay in the 20’s most of the half before increasing to 37 late in the half. Two P.J. Boutte free throws in the final seconds would create the final margin.

Calliste would lead all scorers with a career-high 27 points, knocking down 6-of-8 three-pointers on the night. He was joined in double figures by Ray McCallum, who added 19, and Bruinsma, who had 17 off the bench. Bruinsma was 7-of-9 from the floor.

On the night, Detroit was 41-for-77 from the field and 11-of-22 from three-point range. Youngstown State was limited to 20-of-54 shooting and was just 2-of-14 from three.

DJ Cole had a career-high 16 points for the Penguins, while Damian Eargle had 14. Kendrick Perry, limited by foul trouble throughout, had nine points.

Detroit will continue its road trip at Cleveland State on Saturday, with a 4:30 p.m. EST tip at the Wolstein Center. Youngstown State will be off until Jan. 17, when the Penguins head to Green Bay. The game will be carried on ESPN3, tipping at 8 p.m. EST.
