HORIZON LEAGUE HEADLINES

Defending League champion Butler opened its season with a 58-48 victory at Drake Saturday with three true freshmen in the starting lineup. Starting guards Shelvin Mack and Ronald Nored and swingman Gordon Hayward combined for 22 points. Reserve guard Zach Hahn led the Bulldogs with 13 points.

Preseason League favorite Cleveland State rallied for a 58-55 win over Oakland in its season opener Saturday. The Vikings trailed the entire game until Norris Cole's jumper with just over three minutes remaining and then held off the Grizzlies to improve to 13-2 at the Wolstein Center in the last two seasons.

Loyola senior J.R. Blount scored a career-high and Gentile Center-record 42 points in the Ramblers' 86-79 season-opening loss to Rockhurst Saturday. He made 12-of-22 field-goal attempts and 17-of-20 at the free-throw line. The 42 points were five shy of Alfredrick Hughes' single-game record of 47 set in 1985.

Milwaukee won two of its three games at the World Vision Classic over the weekend. The Panthers defeated Loyola Marymount (75-51) and UC Davis (81-75) before falling to host Iowa State (79-61) Sunday. Against UC Davis, UWM rallied from a 24-point halftime deficit for its largest comeback in its Division I history.

Valparaiso rolled past Marian 87-56 Saturday in its season opener. Sophomore Michael Rogers scored 23 points, and freshman Cameron Witt -- a 6-foot-9 freshman from Tasmania, Australia -- had 16 on 8-of-11 shooting off the bench.
