HORIZON LEAGUE TEAM NOTES
BUTLER BULLDOGS (3-0)
Butler has started 3-0 for the third straight year.The Bulldogs have won nine straight games against Indiana opponents and 13 of their last 14 meetings with teams from the Hoosier state.Six Butler players recorded a career high in scoring last week. Junior Avery Jukes (15), and freshmen Shelvin Mack (19) and Gordon Hayward (15) highlighted the list with collegiate-best totals against IU-South Bend on Saturday.Freshmen Chase Stigall and Emerson Kampen will redshirt this season.
CLEVELAND STATE VIKINGS (2-2)Cleveland State is 4-1 in the state of Florida over the past 13 months. The mark includes wins over South Florida and Florida State.Sophomore Norris Cole set a new career high with 20 points at Washington last Tuesday and then scored 17 vs. Kansas State on Saturday.Senior J'Nathan Bullock became the fifth player in school history to attempt 1,000 field goals and 500 free throws in a career over the weekend.
DETROIT TITANS (1-2)Detroit has outrebounded its opponent in all three games this season. The Titans outrebounded just 11 opponents all of last year.The Titans improved to 66-11 in home openers since 1932 with a 62-47 victory over Eastern Michigan on Saturday.UDM also improved to 56-15 all-time against the Eagles.The 15-point win on Saturday was Detroit's largest over a Division I opponent since Jan. 6, 2007.
GREEN BAY PHOENIX (2-2)Green Bay, which opens its home season Saturday against Massachusetts, sports a 31-8 (.795) record in home openers through the years. The Phoenix has won five straight and 18 of its last 21 home debuts.Green Bay began the season with four games in six days. It was the first time since 1999-00 -- and just the eighth time ever -- that the Phoenix played four games in less than a week.Green Bay has made 86 of 97 free throws on the year (.887). No Phoenix player has missed more than three attempts.Green Bay has had a different leading scorer in every game this season.
LOYOLA RAMBLERS (2-3)Senior J.R. Blount recently moved into 20th place on Loyola's career scoring chart (1,236).Loyola posted a 54-51 win over Western Michigan at University Arena on Saturday. The Broncos entered the affair 56-9 at home under head coach Steve Hawkins.Loyola is playing teams from the Southeastern (Georgia), Big East (Saint John's) and Big Ten (Purdue) conferences in the same season for the first time since 1986-87.The Ramblers have a chance to beat foes from the SEC and Big East in the same season for the first time since 1964.
MILWAUKEE PANTHERS (3-2)Milwaukee shot 60 percent from the field in its win over Upper Iowa -- the fourth-best performance in UWM's Division I history.Milwaukee has now shot 50 percent or better twice this season after doing it just once all of last year.The Panthers have already had eight different players reach the 10-point plateau in a game in 2008-09.
UIC FLAMES (1-2)Senior Josh Mayo's 50-point effort over two games last week moved the guard into 11th place on UIC's all-time career scoring charts. He has 1,270 points three games into his final collegiate season.Senior Scott VanderMeer collected five blocked shots vs. DePaul on Saturday. He needs just 22 more blocks to eclipse the Horizon League mark of 225 set by Evansville's Dan Godfread from 1985-90.Sophomore Tori Boyd scored a career-high 17 points in UIC's 84-77 win over Northern Iowa on Nov. 19, hitting a career-best four three-pointers.
VALPARAISO CRUSADERS (2-3)The recent Paradise Jam marked Valparaiso's first games as a Division I program outside the 50 states (St. Thomas, Virgin Islands).Valparaiso started 2-0 for the fourth straight year, but has since lost three straight contests.The Crusaders have had four different leading scorers in five games this year.
WRIGHT STATE RAIDERS (0-3)Wright State led by 10 points with four minutes to go, but lost in overtime at Central Michigan on Saturday (70-68).Junior Cory Cooperwood led WSU with 16 points and 11 rebounds against the Chippewas.
YOUNGSTOWN STATE PENGUINS (1-2)Youngstown State had six players score at least 10 points in a 96-59 win over Allegheny College on Saturday. It marked the first time since 2006 that has occurred.Senior Jack Liles averaged a double-double last week with 12 points and 10.5 rebounds per game. Liles scored 12 points and grabbed a season-high 13 rebounds against Allegheny. He also scored 12 points at Maryland.The Penguins made 10 three-pointers against Allegheny. It was the first time YSU made at least 10 threes since Feb. 20, 2008.
