HORIZON LEAGUE TEAM NOTES

BUTLER BULLDOGS (8-1, 2-0)

  • Butler tied the fifth-best start in school history with its 8-0 record, prior to a loss at #21/21 Ohio State on Saturday.
  • Freshmen Shelvin Mack and Gordon Hayward each put together back-to-back 20-point scoring efforts for the Bulldogs. Mack had 22 points at Youngstown State on Dec. 6 and 20 points at Bradley on Wednesday, while Hayward notched 20 at Bradley and 25 at Ohio State on Saturday.
  • The setback at Ohio State snapped Butler's string of 10 straight regular-season wins over schools from the Bowl Championship Series conferences. Butler is 11-3 in its last 14 games against schools from the BCS conferences.
  • Butler nailed a season-high 13 three-point field goals in its win at Bradley. The Bulldogs then added eight more threes at Ohio State. Eleven of Butler's 12 players have hit at least one three this season.

    CLEVELAND STATE VIKINGS (7-4, 1-1)
  • Senior Cedric Jackson canned a 60-footer as time expired to give Cleveland State a 72-69 upset of #11/11 Syracuse on Monday night at the Carrier Dome. It was Jackson's only three of the contest.
  • Monday night's tilt was Cleveland State's first at the Carrier Dome since the Vikings won games over Indiana (83-79) and St. Joseph's (75-69) in the first two rounds of the 1986 NCAA Championship.
  • Cleveland State has held six of its last seven opponents to less than 60 points. During a recent six-game stretch, the Vikings limited their opponents to .352 shooting (103-for-293), including just .269 from three-point range (29-for-108).
  • Two losses last week dropped Cleveland State to 15th in the most recent Mid-Major Basketball Poll. The Vikings, who ended the 2007-08 season unranked, received 249 votes to be one of two Horizon League teams to make the poll.

    DETROIT TITANS (2-6, 0-2)
  • Detroit was outrebounded for the first time this year on Sunday at Bowling Green (50-27).
  • Detroit has dropped 18 games in a row on the road as well as 16 straight conference road games.
  • Detroit will honor former standout Spencer Haywood during its contest against Aquinas on Wednesday. The game will mark the 40th anniversary of his first collegiate game as a Titan where he shattered the backboard on a dunk.

    GREEN BAY PHOENIX (6-3, 2-0)
  • Green Bay had its six-game winning streak snapped at Wisconsin on Saturday. It was the team's longest winning streak since taking six straight during the 2004-05 season.
  • The Phoenix is allowing just 55.3 points per game in its six wins, but 77.0 in its three losses.
  • Senior Mike Schachtner moved into eighth place on the school's all-time scoring list (1,395 points) at Wisconsin on Saturday.
  • Green Bay is playing its final two contests of a seven-game stretch that included six home contests.

    LOYOLA RAMBLERS (5-5, 0-1)
  • Loyola posted its third straight home win on Saturday -- a 52-47 victory over UMKC.
  • Loyola has won 20 of its last 24 home games versus non-conference foes.
  • Senior Darrin Williams recorded his first career double-double with 10 points and 10 rebounds in the win over UMKC. He has now scored at least 10 points in three consecutive games.
  • Senior Leon Young made his first appearance of the year in Loyola's win over UMKC. He was sidelined for the first nine games this season with a broken hand.

    MILWAUKEE PANTHERS (5-5, 2-0)
  • Milwaukee was held to season lows for points (45) and field-goal percentage (32.1) in its loss at Miami (Ohio) on Thursday. It was also the first time this season the Panthers did not have a player reach double figures.
  • Milwaukee's only game this week is against Bradley in a return from last season's BracketBusters contest. The Braves won that game, 84-72, handing the Panthers their ninth-straight loss to a Missouri Valley Conference foe.
  • The game with Bradley is UWM's only contest in a span of 19 days, with the Panthers taking time off for final exams this week and the Christmas holiday next week.

    UIC FLAMES (6-2, 1-0)
  • Josh Mayo hit just one three-pointer in UIC's 66-60 win at Georgia Tech, marking the first time in four games that the senior guard has hit under five treys.
  • Josh Mayo registered 17 points -- on 6-of-14 shooting -- to go along with seven assists and six rebounds against the Yellow Jackets.
  • Senior Scott VanderMeer is averaging 15.0 ppg and 10.3 rpg in UIC's last four games. He has scored at least 17 points in three of those four contests.
  • Josh Mayo is shooting 63.6 percent (21-for-33) from downtown while averaging a team-leading 20.5 ppg during UIC's current five-game winning streak.
  • Scott VanderMeer is averaging 14.6 ppg and 10.6 rpg during the streak.
  • The Flames are averaging 73.6 ppg as a team while holding foes to 61.0 ppg during that span.

    VALPARAISO CRUSADERS (3-6, 1-1)
  • Valparaiso will take on the nation's #1 team for the fifth straight year when it battles North Carolina on Saturday at the United Center in Chicago.
  • The game marks Valparaiso's third meeting with a top 10 foe at the United Center over the past seven seasons.

    WRIGHT STATE RAIDERS (2-7, 0-2)
  • Wright State posted back-to-back wins over Toledo (50-35) and Arkansas-Little Rock (62-55) last week.
  • The defensive effort against Toledo -- 35 points -- was the fewest allowed in 39 years of Wright State basketball.
  • Wright State forced 22 Wake Forest turnovers on Sunday, but the nationally-ranked Demon Deacons held on for a 66-53 win.
  • Freshman Kyle Pressley and sophomore Troy Tabler may be back from injuries this week. Junior Vaughn Duggins is expected to be sidelined a few more weeks with his broken finger.

    YOUNGSTOWN STATE PENGUINS (1-7, 0-2)
  • Youngstown State did not play last week.
  • The Penguins suffered an 82-74 loss at Kent State on Monday. Sophomore Vance Cooksey (24) and junior Kelvin Bright (21) combined for 45 of YSU's 74 points.
