HORIZON LEAGUE MEN'S SOCCER NEWS AND NOTES
BUTLER IS TOURNAMENT TESTED: The Bulldogs won the Courtyard By Marriott East Classic, hosted by Louisville, to open the 2008 campaign. It was the third straight year that Butler opened the season with a tournament championship. The Bulldogs are 6-3-3 in tournament play in three seasons under head coach Kelly Findley.
GOOD DOGS: Butler opened the season with three straight wins for the first time since 2005, and the Bulldogs started the year with three consecutive shutouts for the first time since 1990. Through four matches, BU has outscored opponents by an 8-3 margin.
THREE VIKINGS NAMED TO ALL-TOURNEY TEAM: Cleveland State juniors Marco DiFranco and Slava Ubiparipovic and sophomore Audric Kilroy were each named to the all-tournament team at Missouri State last weekend. DiFranco earned the honor after scoring a goal and adding an assist in the 2-0 win over Missouri State. Kilroy returned to the lineup after missing the first two matches due to injury and started both contests on defense while Ubiparipovic spearheaded the Viking offense with four shots in the two matches.
FRIDAY WAS A WIN-WIN SITUATION: When the Vikings won at Missouri State Friday and the women's soccer team claimed a victory at Robert Morris earlier in the day, it marked just the second time in school history that both CSU soccer teams won on the same day. The other time came August 27, 2006 when the women defeated Delaware State, 6-0, for the first win in program history and the men followed with a 3-1 win over Canisius in a doubleheader at Krenzler Field.
TITANS ON THE BOARD: Freshman Sam Seppo scored his first collegiate goal as he netted UDM's first tally of the season in a 3-1 loss to Canisius Friday. Two days later, junior Nick Dreshaj pushed Detroit ahead 1-0 in the opening minutes against Buffalo.
STREAKING: After starting the season with a 2-2 tie against UMKC, UIC has won its last three matches. The Flames have outscored their last three foes, 9-4.
BAGGIO LEADING THE WAY: Junior Baggio Husidic has at least one point in each of the Flames' four matches this season, including three goals. He has had a hand in five of UIC's 11 goals this season.
LOYOLA GOING POLLING: Loyola currently stands 25th in this week's College Soccer News National Poll and 24th in the latest Soccer America poll. The Ramblers appeared in last week's CSN poll, marking the first time the program has ever been nationally ranked. Loyola is charted 5th in the NSCAA/adidas Great Lakes Region poll.
SPREADING THE WEALTH: Four different Loyola players each scored a goal last weekend, with junior Michael Ferguson, senior Keum Sung Kim and freshman Scott Waggoner contributing to LU's 3-2 win at Denver Friday. Alex Jones scored the game-winner in a 1-0 victory at Air Force Sunday.
CAREER FIRST FOR SELLERS: Valpo freshman forward Tyler Sellers found the back of the net for his first career goal in the 22nd minute against Western Illinois. Sellers' heroics weren't enough, however, as Valpo lost 2-1.
ONE DOWN THREE TO GO: This weekend's match against Bradley will be the second time Valparaiso has met a team that participated in the 2007 NCAA Tournament. Valpo will take on four such teams. The Crusaders already own a win over the first NCAA team they faced, a 1-0 win over DePaul on August 31.
BANKS, RICKETTS NAMED ALL-TOURNEY: Sophomore JC Banks and senior Toissant Ricketts earned all-tournament team honors at the four-team Akron Tournament. Green Bay split two matches at Akrong, highlighted by a win over 2007 NCAA Sweet Sixteen team West Virginia. Banks scored twice against the Mountaineers, who were No. 16 in the NSCAA preseason poll.
PROCHAZKA LENDS A HAND: Sophomore David Prochazka got in the scoring column against West Virginia, tallying assists on both of Banks' goals.
ROOKIE CONTRIBUTION: Three freshmen have accounted for all three goals and two assists by the Panthers this season. Evan Bartzis (2g, 0a - 4) and Eric Frazier (1g, 1a - 3) are the leading scorers, and Nick Dundon has picked up UWM's remaining point.
LATE HEROICS BY FRAZIER: Eric Frazier scored the game-winner against Dayton with just 41 seconds remaining in regulation last Friday. That marks the latest a winning UWM goal was scored since Neil Dombrowski netted the game-winner against Akron Oct. 5, 2003 with just 33 seconds remaining in the match.
ALL-TOURNAMENT HONORS: Two Panthers grabbed all-tournament honors last weekend at Wisconsin. Goalkeeper Grant Fernstrum and Eric Frazier were honored for their play as UWM split two matches.
GROSSMAN NAMED ALL-TOURNEY: Senior Josh Grossman was named to an all-tournament team for the second straight weekend as he was honored last weekend at the Buffalo Fall Classic. Grossman launched three shots in the tournament, just a weekend after tallying his 12th career assist at the Flyer Marriot Invitational.
A POINT A DAY FOR FLEAK: Junior Braden Fleak tallied WSU's first goal of the season for in the season opener against Wisconsin in the Flyer Marriot Invitational. He now has 17 goals and five assists for 39 points for his career. Fleak averages almost a point per match in his 43-match career and is only four goals away from cracking WSU's career top 10 list in goals scored.
