NEWS AND NOTES FROM AROUND THE HORIZON LEAGUE

DOGGING THEIR OPPONENTS: Butler's 3-0 win over Robert Morris was the Bulldogs' fifth shutout of the season, one more then they managed all of last season. The school record for shutouts is nine. BU has allowed just five goals this season.

PATANO CLIMBS BULLDOG CHARTS: BU senior Frank Patano scored three tallies last week to pull into sixth on Butler's all-time goals list. He now has found the back of the net 31 times. Additionally, he scored seven points and is sixth in Butler history with 71 points.

VIKINGS SHOOTING FOR CHICAGO: Cleveland State, which was picked ninth in the preseason poll, enters Horizon League play with a 1-4-2 record. The Vikings will open the league schedule at UIC and Loyola, who were picked to finish first and third, respectively. Last year, CSU battled UIC to a scoreless tie but fell, 2-0, to Loyola. Both matches were played at Krenzler Field.

HARPEL HITS CENTURY SAVE MARK: CSU sophomore goalkeeper Nick Harpel has made 39 saves in the seven matches to date, ranking second in the Horizon League with 5.57 saves per match. He stopped nine shots - including a penalty kick - Sunday night against No. 10 Akron. His save total against the Zips allowed the sophomore to pass the 100 save mark for his career.

UIC POLL POSITION: UIC has spent the entire season in the national rankings. The Flames enter this week ranked in the top 15 in all four major college soccer polls. Here is a breakdown of UIC's national rankings this week:

Soccer America: No. 7
Soccer Times: No. 9
College Soccer News: No. 15
NSCAA/adidas: No. 10 (No. 4 in Great Lakes Region)

HUSIDIC SURPASSING CAREER TOTALS: UIC junior Baggio Husidic entered the season with 10 career points (3g, 1a). In seven contests this season, Husidic has 12 points (5g, 2a). The Serbia native has scored a goal in five of the Flames' last six matches.

LOYOLA GOES POLLING, TOO: Loyola also represents the Horizon League in the national rankings, appearing at No. 29 in the College Soccer News poll. The Ramblers are ranked No. 30 in College Soccer News. Additionally, LU is charted ninth in the NSCAA/adidas Great Lakes Region poll.

LATE HEROICS BY KIM: Loyola senior Keum Sung Kim scored the game-winner with just 43 seconds against SIU-Edwardsville Sunday. Kim is now tied for the team lead with two goals and seven shots on goal and leads the team in points (6), shots (16) and assists (2).

CRUSADERS GETTING REVENGE IN 2008: Following its 3-0 win over Western Michigan, Valparaiso is now 3-1-0 against teams it lost to in 2007. The Crusaders have posted wins over Eastern Illinois, Western Michigan and DePaul. The only team to beat Valpo twice in a row is Evansville.

ZOBECK DOING IT AT BOTH ENDS: Valpo freshman Kyle Zobeck made 14 saves over the weekend and now has an .815 save percentage to go with his 1.22 goals-against average. Zobeck also contributed on the offensive end last week, recording an assist against Western Michigan. It was the first assist by a Crusader goalkeeper since 2001.

GREEN BAY STRONG AT HOME: Over the past five seasons, Green Bay has posted an 8-1-1 record in its Country Inn & Suites Green Bay Nike Soccer Classic. All of the wins have come under head coach Tom Poitras.

KSENIDI LEAVES HIS MARK: Junior Ilya Ksenidi scored the first two goals of his career over the weekend to help the Phoenix to a 1-0-1 mark. He tallied Green Bay's first goal in a 2-1 win over Western Illinois before adding a goal that helped the Phoenix to a tie against IUPUI. The pair of goals earned Ksenidi all-tournament honors.

MILWAUKEE SURGING OF LATE: After winning the team title at the Panther Invitational Sept. 14 and then winning its only match last weekend, Milwaukee is 2-0-1 in its last three contests. UWM has yielded just one goal during the last three matches, with that coming on a penalty kick by SIU-Edwardsville.

IF PENALTIES DIDN'T EXIST: Milwaukee senior Grant Fernstrum and a stingy Panther defense have allowed just six goals this season. However, two of those scores have come on penalty kicks, meaning Fernstrum has allowed just four goals in the flow of play this season. Without the two PKs, Fernstrum would have a goals-against average of 0.54.

FLEAK CLIMBING THE RAIDER RECORDS: Wright State junior Braden Fleak has 19 career goals, just two more tallies short of putting him in the career top 10 at Wright State. He tallied 13 his rookie season, three as a sophomore and he has three goals in 2008.
