Horizon League News & Notes
HOT START FOR VALPO: The Crusaders have started 2-0-0 for just the fourth time in program history and just the second time in the last 21 years. Valparaiso defeated Eastern Illinois in Friday's opener (2-1) before blanking DePaul on Sunday, 1-0. Both of the weekend's win avenged losses from the 2007 campaign. Both EIU and DePaul shut out the Crusaders last season.
SOME MEMORABLE FIRSTS: Sophomore Jon Obial scored his first career goal, the lone tally of Sunday's 1-0 win over DePaul. Additionally, Valpo freshman goalkeeper Kyle Zobeck started both of this weekend's matches, making 10 saves and putting up a 0.50 GAA. He started his collegiate career with a shutout streak of 177:14.
VALPO MEETS SOME OLD FOES: Both of Valparaiso's matches this week are against Mid-Continent Conference schools, IUPUI and Western Illinois. Valpo was a part of the conference until July 1, 2007.
ALL-TOURNAMENT HONORS FOR SEPPO: Detroit freshman Sam Seppo led the Titans with five and had three shots on goal to earn all-tournament honors at Kentucky over the weekend. UDM dropped both matches in Lexington and did not score a goal.
HISTORIC WIN FOR LOYOLA: Loyola's 2-1 win over No. 5 Santa Clara over the weekend was a historic one, as SCU is the highest-ranked team the Ramblers have ever defeated. Loyola downed the Broncos by way of one goal each by juniors Michael Ferguson and Alex Jones. Keum Sung Kim assisted on both tallies.
LOYOLA EARNS NATIONAL RECOGNITION: Following Loyola's 1-0-1 opening weekend, the Ramblers have earned the No. 30 national ranking in the College Soccer News poll. Additionally, College Soccer News also named senior Keum Sung Kim to its National Team of the Week for his two assists against Santa Clara. The Ramblers also rank No. 5 in the National Soccer Coaches Association of America (NSCAA)/adidas Great Lakes Region Poll.
A HIGH-SCORING AFFAIR AT FLAMES FIELD: UIC's 4-3 win over Santa Clara on Labor Day evening involved an early shootout that saw UIC take a 2-1 lead in the match's first 21:39. The Flames added another tally 13 minutes later to go up 3-1 before holding on for the win.
BAGGIO HUSIDIC LEADS UIC: UIC junior Baggio Husidic had five points in the opening weekend, totaling a goal and an assist against UMKC Friday, before finding the net once more against Santa Clara Monday night.
KOEWLER OFF TO GOOD START FOR WSU: Appearing in just his fourth career match, redshirt sophomore Matt Koewler played well in goal for Wright State over the weekend, allowing only three goals in almost 200 minutes of work. Koewler made only two saves, facing only five shots on goal in two matches. He owns a 1.38 goals against average.
A POINT A DAY FOR FLEAK: Junior Braden Fleak tallied the first goal of the season for WSU last Friday against Wisconsin in the Flyer Marriot Invitational. Fleak now has 17 goals and five assists for 39 points for his career. The junior averages almost a point per match in his 41-match career and is only four goals away from cracking WSU's career top 10 list in goals scored.
MORE OFFENSE FOR THE RAIDERS: Josh Grossman now has 12 helpers for his career, after assisting on the lone goal of the weekend for the Raiders. Grossman is five assists shy of entering the Raiders top 10 in career assists and he has a chance to become only the second player in school history to lead the team in assists for three straight seasons.
