HORIZON LEAGUE MEN'S SOCCER PLAYER OF THE WEEK
Antou Jallow
UW-Milwaukee, Senior, Forward, Uppsala, Sweden
Antou Jallow of UW-Milwaukee has been selected the Horizon League Men's Soccer Player of the Week for Oct. 18.
UWM senior striker Antou Jallow enjoyed his finest week of the season this past week while leading Milwaukee to a pair of Horizon League victories. The Uppsala, Sweden native began the week scoring the game-winner and assisting on another goal in UWM's 5-1 defeat of UW-Green Bay on Wednesday. Jallow capped the week scoring all three goals in Milwaukee's 3-1 defeat of Wright State on Friday. The three-goal game was the second multiple-goal game of the season for Jallow and ninth in his four year career. The senior is now tied for second-place all-time in UWM history with 49 career goals. For the week Jallow scored nine points on four goals and an assist on just six total shots.
OTHER TOP HORIZON LEAGUE PERFORMERS - OCT. 18
David Stewert
Cleveland State, Sophomore, Midfielder, Ingleside, Texas
David scored the game-winning goal in Friday's win over Buffalo. The Texas native has provided hard work and steady play in the midfield this season, and has record a goal and three assists on the season.
Andrew Ornoch
Detroit, Sophomore, Midfielder, Toronto, Ontario
Ornoch turned in a stellar week for the Titans in two contests last week as he helped the squad to a perfect 2-0 mark. The victories extended Detroit's winning streak to six games, the longest such skein since 1996. Starting both contests, Ornoch led the Red, White and Blue to back-to-back 1-0 victories over IPFW and Valparaiso. Against the Mastodons, he paced the Titan attack with a game-high five shots, including three on net. He followed that by collecting the game-winner on a penalty kick in double-overtime victory to give UDM a 1-0 victory over the Crusaders. In that tilt he had a game-best three-shot performance. The win over Valparaiso also helped the Titans surpass their victory for the entire 2003 campaign. On the season, Ornoch is tied for the team lead in assists (3) while ranking second in goals (4), points (11), shots (32), shots on goal (16) and game-winners (2).
Eric Cervantes
UIC, Sophomore, Forward, Hoffman Estates, Ill.
The spectacular sophomore season continued for Eric Cervantes this week, as the blazing-fast forward knocked in two goals during the Flames' two non-conference games. Cervantes started the scoring both games, converting a nice ball through a crowd of defenders and past the keeper against UMKC on Wednesday. Cervantes than sped into the penalty box and chipped in a Kenneth Nightingale feed against 25th-ranked Memphis on Sunday for his team-leading fifth goal. The Hoffman Estates native launched 11 shots, including seven against goal, in two matches and upped his team-high point total to 11.
Mark Eckerle
Loyola, Senior, Midfielder/Forward, Downers Grove, Ill.
Eckerle scored in both Loyola matches this week, as the Ramblers came back from a nine-day layoff with a pair of inspired performances. Eckerle opened the weekend by firing the Ramblers into a 1-0 lead at Butler, scoring his third goal of the season in the 23rd minute in an eventual 2-1 loss, and closed out his week by sealing Loyola's first Horizon League win of the season, scoring in the 79th minute to give LU a 2-0 lead at Cleveland State and effectively dash any hopes of a Viking comeback. Eckerle leads the Ramblers with 11 points and is tied for the team lead with four goals.
Josh Okoampa
UW-Green Bay, Sophomore, Forward, Brooklyn Park, Minn.
Okoampa tallied his eighth goal of the year with his strike against Wright State Oct. 17, as the sophomore forward has scored five times over the past six games.
HORIZON LEAGUE NEWS & NOTES
Butler Bulldogs (10-3-1, 4-0 HL)
Senior David Wyrick scored the game-winner in Butler's 2-1 Horizon League victory over Loyola. It was the second time in Butler's last two meetings with the Ramblers that Wyrick had the game-winner.
Goalkeeper Evan Reinhardt returned to action against Loyola and picked up his fifth win of the season. Reinhardt suffered a broken arm in Butler's win at Xavier last month.
Butler stretched its current unbeaten streak to ten straight matches with a tie at Cincinnati and a victory over Loyola last week. The tie at Cincinnati snapped Butler's eight-match winning streak.
Cleveland State Vikings (5-7-2, 0-3-1 HL)
The Vikings will wrap up a six-match homestand by hosting Detroit on senior day on Wednesday.
Amir Kettani posted seven saves, several of them stopping solid chances late in the match, in a 1-0 victory over Buffalo on Friday.
All but two of Cleveland State's matches this year have been decided by a goal or less.
Detroit Titans (9-4, 3-2 HL)
With their win over Valparaiso, the Titans surpassed their win total for the entire 2003 campaign (8). The victory also extended Detroit's season-best winning streak to six games, the longest such skein since 1996. The Titans' last three victories have all come in overtime with the wins over IPFW and Valparaiso both coming on penalty kicks.
Detroit will have a stern road test on Wednesday when the Red, White and Blue tangles with Cleveland State. If recent meetings are any indication, the game should be close as the last three encounters have been decided by one goal, including two going into overtime. The Titans will then close the week with a non-conference tilt at IUPUI.
Freshman goalkeeper Sasha Boskovic has now registered back-to-back shutouts and has posted four on the campaign. He came within two seconds versus Wright State of having that be three straight shutouts.
UIC Flames (3-9-2, 2-2-1 HL)
UIC's loss against UMKC was the first home loss of the year for the Flames, who now hold a 53-14-5 all-time mark at Flames Field.
Eric Cervantes and Kenneth Nightingale had a great week creating goal-scoring opportunities for UIC, as the two forwards combined to for 15 shots and 10 shots-on-goal that generated two goals. Cervantes scored both goals, while Nightingale earned an assist on each score.
The Flames enter Sunday's match with UW-Green Bay with the all-time series in favor of the Phoenix, who lead 16-9-1. Last season UIC went to Green Bay and used two Pete Kelley goals to steal a 2-1 win.
UIC goalkeeper Jeff Engelbrecht has given up a measly goal in his last 208 minutes of work.
Loyola Ramblers (2-11-1, 1-4 HL)
Loyola picked up its first Horizon League victory of the season with a 2-0 shutout of Cleveland State on Sunday. The Ramblers will host Northwestern on Wed., Oct. 20 and UW-Milwaukee on Sun., Oct. 24.
UW-Green Bay Phoenix (5-7-2, 2-2-1 HL)
The Phoenix will have a week to prepare for a key Horizon League contest as UW-Green Bay will head to Chicago to face UIC Sunday, Oct. 24 at 1 p.m.
UW-Milwaukee Panthers (5-4-3, 3-1 HL)
The Panthers picked up two league victories this past week as they defeated in-state foe UW-Green Bay, 5-1, on Wednesday before turning away Wright State, 3-1, on Friday.
Wright State Raiders (5-8-1, 2-3-1 HL)
After playing three matches last week, which included a tie with UW-Green Bay and losses to IUPUI and UW-Milwaukee, the Raiders' schedule is light this week as they play host to Marshall on Fri., Oct. 22.
