DAYTON, Ohio -- Wright State sophomore Michael Schum has been named a Preseason Third-Team All-American by the National Collegiate Baseball Writers Association. The right-hander was the Horizon League's 2009 Relief Pitcher of the Year and earned Freshman All-America accolades from Collegiate Baseball Magazine a season ago.

Schum is the first Wright State player to earn Preseason All-America honors from the NCBWA and was the first WSU player to earn Freshman All-America accolades last season. In 2009, the closer tied for second in school history with 13 saves and ranked fifth on WSU's all-time list with a 1.95 earned run average.

The submarine-style pitcher tossed 74 innings last year and ranked among the national leaders in ERA, saves and walks-plus-hits per inning pitched. He was the highest ranked freshman on the ERA charts, sitting third nationally, and was one of only three rookies to appear in the Top 25 for saves and walks-per-nine innings.

Schum led the Horizon League in ERA a season ago, held opponents to a League-low .225 batting average and made a school-record 34 appearances. He recorded the final out in 22 of WSU's 33 wins.

The Bright, Ind., native was also named to the Horizon League's Second Team and All-Newcomer Squad in 2009.
