Junior Angela Rodriguez scored a game-high 19 points and made all four of her free throw attempts in the final 16 seconds to help the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee women's basketball team secure a 68-64 victory over Eastern Kentucky University Sunday afternoon at Morales Coliseum.
The Panthers (3-2) trailed the Colonels (3-2) by 10 points early in the game, but used a 19-6 scoring run to get back into it and then iced the game at the line late. After starting the day 5-for-14 from the charity stripe, Milwaukee made nine of its last 10 - including all six in the final 24 seconds of the contest to finish the weekend at 1-1 in the San Juan Shootout.
Senior Sami Tucker added 15 points and a team-high eight rebounds and sophomore Ashley Green chipped in with eight points and seven rebounds. Freshman Avyanna Young had seven points and sophomore Janna Swopshire added six points and three boards.
Youngstown State 76, Miami Ohio 56
Liz Hornberger scored a career-high 18 points, and the Youngstown State women's basketball team scored 51 points on 63.6-percent shooting in the second half to defeat Miami (Ohio) 76-56 on Sunday at Millett Hall.
The Penguins improved to 4-0 for the first time since the 1996-97 season and won at Miami for the first time since 1979.Hornberger scored 12 of her points in the second half, and Heidi Schlegel scored all 12 of her points in the second half in her first game of the season. Brandi Brown added 18 points while Shar'Rae Davis had 12 points and Karen Flagg finished with a career-best 10.
#16/17 Ohio State 82, Wright State 52
The Wright State women's basketball team fell behind 22-4 early and never recovered in dropping an 82-52 decision at #16/17 Ohio State Sunday afternoon at Value City Arena.
Ohio State scored the first nine points of the contest and led 22-4 before the Raiders responded with an 11-2 run to cut the deficit to 24-15 with 7:30 remaining in the first half.
Kim Demmings led the Raiders with 17 points while Ivory James had her best game of the young season with 11 points and eight rebounds. KC Elkins added nine points.
Northwestern 80, Loyola 53
Northwestern used a 23-5 run that bridged the two halves to take control as Loyola dropped an 80-53 decision to the Wildcats this afternoon at Welsh-Ryan Arena in Evanston. Loyola (3-2) sees its three-game winning streak snapped while NU stays perfect, moving to 5-0 on the year.
Loyola struggled to shoot the ball all day, shooting 34% from the floor and 46% (6 of 13) from the free throw line while Northwestern shot a blazing 55% for the game.
Katie Faught led the Ramblers with those 11 points with Simone Law (10 points) and Patrice King (10 points) also reaching double figures.
