INDIANAPOLIS -- Continually attacking, the Milwaukee women's soccer team collected their third straight Horizon League women's soccer tournament title on Sunday, defeating Butler, 5-0, at the Butler Bowl.
With their quick strike offense, Milwaukee (12-6-0) accumulated 20 shots, putting nine on frame. The constant pressure paid off of the Panthers, beginning in the 30th minute, when Sarah Stern took advantage of a loose ball in the box for the easy strike, putting Milwaukee ahead, 1-0.
The goal was the third of the season and first in the tournament for the freshman, who added to her points total in the second half.
In the 50th minute, Stern brought the ball through the middle, Stern laid a pass off to Sarah Hagen, who took one dribble before drilling a shot in stride across the box to the low left corner.
The tally was the 11th career tournament goal for Hagen in seven tournament contests.
The offensive machine was just warming up for the Panthers, as Helen Steinhauser mishit a cross attempt in the 58th minute; instead of the ball curling towards the box, it went straight, catching the right side of the net and giving Milwaukee a 3-0 lead.
Just two minutes later, Hagen dropped a pass to Meghan Elvington, who nailed a shot to the upper right corner from 15 yards out.
Hagen closed within a single point of the Horizon League single-season points record (150) with her second goal of the match, taking a pass from Alyssa Chamberlain and beating Olivia Walter, who had come out to challenge, from the top of the box.
Butler's best scoring opportunity came at the 10-minute mark of the first half, as Katie Griswold and Rachel Melendez each had shots on goal that were blocked.
With three goals and an assist, Hagen earned tournament MVP honors for the third straight season; joining her on the All-Tournament Team were Stern, Sarah Talbert, Keara Thompson and Leslie Deebach.
Butler was represented by Sarah Phelps, Griswold and Nikki Hafele. Detroit's Alexandra Suschak and Kaitlyn Quarrell, along with Lauren Patterson and Amber Kasmer of Wright State composed the team.
The title was the seventh Horizon League Tournament championship for Milwaukee, who won titles in 1997, 2001, 2002, 2005, 2008 and 2009 previously.
Milwaukee will find out their destination for the 2010 NCAA Women's Soccer Tournament on Monday, Nov. 8; the field will be announced at 4:30 p.m. ET on ESPNU.
