Into the second round of the NCAA Tournament for the third time in program history, the Milwaukee women's soccer team will look to go where no Horizon League-affiliated team has been since 1994 when they meet Ohio State on Friday evening in Durham, N.C.
Milwaukee (19-2) and Ohio State (11-8-2) last met to start the 2010 season, with the Panthers collecting a 2-1 win in Columbus, Ohio. Sarah Hagen netted UWM's first goal in the match and Nicole Sperl potted the game-winner in the 80th minute to seal the result.
A win would send Milwaukee (19-2) to the Sweet Sixteen, where they would meet the victor of the Duke-Georgia match that follows on Friday. Duke is the No. 1 seed and host for the second and third rounds. The winners will play on Sunday at 12 p.m. ET. Both matches will be available on both streaming video and live stats.
The Panthers are coming off a dominant 3-0 victory over Illinois State in the first round of the tournament, marking the first win in NCAA Tournament play for the program. The previous two times Milwaukee advanced to the second round, it did so on penalty kicks.
In the first home NCAA Tournament match in program history, Milwaukee struck early and often, as Sarah Hagen's header in the sixth minute opened the scoring. The goal gave Hagen 25 on the year, setting a new League and school record. The win, the 19th of the year, set a new program record as well.
Milwaukee is attempting to become the first Horizon League-affiliated school to reach the Sweet 16 since Notre Dame pulled the feat in 1994. The Irish went on to the national championship that season.
