Wednesday Results

The Milwaukee men’s swimming and diving team and the Cleveland State women’s swimming and diving teams hold small leads after the first day at the 2013 Horizon League Swimming and Diving Championships at Flames Natatorium in Chicago, Ill.

The men’s and women’s races are both close after the first day. On the men’s side, UWM’s (119 points) lead over second place Cleveland State (114) is just five points. Wright State is in third (77), followed closely by UIC (73) and Green Bay (72). Valparaiso (54) rounds out the men’s field in sixth.

In the women’s race, the top five teams are within 22 points of each other after the first day. Cleveland State leads with 134 points. Green Bay (125) is second, UIC (121) third and Wright State (113) is in fourth. Last year’s champion Milwaukee (112) sits in fifth place after the first day of competition. Youngstown State (84) and Valparaiso (49) round out the field.

The meet started with Milwaukee repeating in the women’s 200 free relay. The Panthers won in a time of 1:32.45, nipping second-place Cleveland State (1:32.83) by .38 of a second.

Cleveland State won the first men’s relay race, repeating in the 200 free. The Vikings (1:20.30) won by almost a full second over second-place Milwaukee (1:21.14).

Green Bay’s Kendra Rottier started the individual portion on Wednesday night by repeating in the women’s 1000 free with a winning time of 10:07.32. Mark deSwardt, who won the League championship two years ago in the 1000 free, took home the event in 2013, winning in 9:18.12.

UIC’s Whitney Johnson won the first diving event of the meet, taking home top honors in the women’s three-meter event with a score of 299.80.

In the final events of the night, UIC’s women’s 200 medley relay squad out-touched Milwaukee’s team by .12 seconds to win in a time of 1:42.16. On the men’s side, Cleveland State pulled away from the field to win in 1:29.06.

Thursday’s schedule starts at 10 a.m. CT with swimming preliminaries. The men’s 1-meter diving preliminaries and consolation round begin at 1:30 p.m. Thursday night’s finals being at 5:30 p.m. CT.
