Milwaukee Tabs Henschel to Lead Women's Soccer Program

MILWAUKEE, Wis. -- Greg Henschel has been named the new women's soccer coach at the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee, Director of Athletics Rick Costello announced today.

Henschel comes to Milwaukee from UW-Whitewater, where he led both the men's and women's programs to Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference titles and NCAA Tournament berths this past fall.

He has been in charge of both the men's and women's programs at Whitewater since 1999, leading the two programs to a combined 290 victories and 11 NCAA Tournament berths.

Henschel replaces Michael Moynihan, who left UWM last month to become the head coach at Northwestern.

"I would like to thank Rick Costello and Chancellor Mike Lovell for providing me the opportunity to continue the proud tradition of Panther women's soccer. I look forward to working hard to continue building on the tremendous legacy of success Mike Moynihan and David Nikolic have left behind."

"He has a championship pedigree and a long history of success in the state of Wisconsin. Greg has been leading two programs to league titles and NCAA Tournament berths on a regular basis while developing successful young men and women on and off the field. He is taking over a program that has enjoyed tremendous success and I have no doubt he is the guy to help take us to even higher levels."

Henschel capped his tenure as the Warhawk women's coach with a record-setting season in 2011. The team set school records for wins (14) and winning percentage (.705) as he was named the WIAC Coach of the Year. His squad advanced to the NCAA Tournament for the first time in school history, reaching the Sweet 16. The Warhawk women also won the 2010 WIAC title, and Henschel collected 126 victories while in charge of the women's program.

On the men's side, Henschel tallied 164 wins and led the Warhawks to 10 NCAA Tournament berths. His squads have reached the Sweet 16 of the tournament four times. The Warhawks have also won the WIAC title each of the last three years - the first three years the league has sponsored a men's soccer championship - and he is a two-time WIAC Coach of the Year honoree.

Henschel's duties at Whitewater also including serving as the Outdoor Facilities Coordinator for the school's $4 million track and soccer complex, which was initiated and designed during his tenure at the school.

Henschel's background includes assistant coaching stints at both UW-Oshkosh and Thomas College (Georgia).

He is a graduate of UW-Oshkosh, where he played four seasons of collegiate soccer. Upon graduation, he held school records for goals in a single season, goals for a career and total points. His Titan teams made the NCAA Tournament three times, including a Division III Final Four berth in 1994. Henschel also played professionally with the Rockford (Ill.) Raptors of the A-League and the Tallahassee (Fla.) Scorpions of the Eastern Indoor Soccer League.

"I would like to thank UW-Whitewater and Chancellor Telfer for allowing me the opportunity to represent Warhawk athletics for 13 years, helping me grow personally and professionally," Henschel said. "I also have to thank both athletic directors I have served under - Shawn Eichorst and Paul Plinske - as they have allowed me the opportunity to implement my vision for both Warhawk soccer programs. Finally, I wish to offer a special thank you to each student-athlete and their families for sharing my passion for UW-Whitewater and Warhawk soccer. It has been an honor to lead the Warhawk soccer family and I look forward to now becoming a part of the Panther women's soccer family."

Henschel takes over a Panther program coming off a record-setting 2011. Milwaukee won a school-record 19 matches and advanced to the second round of the NCAA Tournament. Milwaukee rose to as high as 10th in the NSCAA Top 25 and ninth in the Soccer America national poll.
