INDIANAPOLIS – Milwaukee junior midfielder Laurie Bell (Poynton, England) is the Horizon League Men’s Soccer Offensive Player of the Week, while Detroit junior goalkeeper Nathan Steinwascher (Sterling Heights, Mich.) has earned Defensive Player of the Week for the week of Sept. 2- Sept. 8.
Milwaukee (2-0-1) opened game one of the 39th Panther Invitational with a 1-1 draw against Drake University before continuing their unbeaten streak with a 2-0 win against Bowling Green State University.
Bell gave Milwaukee’s offense a spark over the weekend, netting a goal in each of the two games. The junior midfielder scored the lone goal against Drake and just fell short of notching the game winner in the remaining seconds of double-overtime after a diving stop by Drake’s goalkeeper. He continued his offensive dominance against the Falcons on Sunday by making a penalty kick, insuring the victory for the Panthers.
In the 38th Annual Mayor’s Cup at Hartwick College, Detroit (0-0-3) tied Cornell 1-1 followed by a 0-0 tie against Robert Morris on Sunday.
In his first game of the weekend, Steinwascher made 10 saves turning aside 18 Cornell shots in an incredible overall performance. On Sunday against Robert Morris, he recorded his second shutout of the year. He finished the weekend with 16 saves, including two key stops against the Colonials early in the match.
UWM makes its first road trip of the year to Chicago, competing against DePaul Friday, Sept. 13 at 4 p.m. CT. Detroit will host in-state foe Michigan State in a quick turnaround match Wednesday, Sept. 11 at 5:00 p.m. ET on Titan Field.
