Horizon League Men's Basketball Weekly Release (Feb. 7, 2011)
INDIANAPOLIS – Milwaukee senior forward Anthony Hill (Milwaukee, Wis.) has been named Horizon League Men’s Basketball Player of the Week, for the week beginning Jan. 31. The honor is the first of the year for Hill and second of his career.
Entering the week in fourth place in the Horizon League, Hill led the Panthers to an 88-75 victory over in-state and League rival Green Bay on Saturday afternoon before a national television audience on ESPNU.
Limited to 27 minutes because of foul trouble, Hill collected his third double-double of the season and second against the Phoenix with 29 points and 15 rebounds. Bouncing back from a 2-for-14 effort from the field in the first meeting between the teams, Hill went 7-for-8 from the floor and converted 15-of-18 free throws as he controlled the interior.
Hill’s 29 points were one shy of his career high, set earlier this year in a 30-point, 12-rebound effort against Youngstown State. The 15 caroms collected by Hill established a new career mark.
Winners of four straight games for the first time this season, Milwaukee takes its streak on the road this weekend, heading to Loyola for an 8 p.m. ET tip on Thursday, Feb. 10. The Panthers will wrap up their trip to Chicago on Saturday, Feb. 12, when the meet UIC in a 4 p.m. ET contest at the UIC Pavilion. Both contests will be carried live on the Horizon League Network, available on HorizonLeague.com.
Top Performers for the Week:
Shelvin Mack, Butler (Jr., G) - Supplementing an 11-point effort with a game-high six rebounds and seven assists, Mack helped Butler split its road trip to northeast Ohio with a 73-61 victory at Cleveland State. Mack led the Bulldogs with 18 points and eight boards in a two-point loss at Youngstown State.
Jeremy Montgomery, Cleveland State (Jr., G) - Montgomery seemingly never missed from three-point range over the weekend, going 8-for-11 from behind the arc en route to averaging 22.0 points on the week. The lefty posted a career-best 26 points in a 76-65 triumph over second-place Valparaiso. On Saturday, Montgomery record a team-high 18 points in just six shots, going 4-for-5 from three-point range.
Chase Simon, Detroit (Jr., G) - Recording back-to-back 20-point efforts over the weekend, Simon helped Detroit climb within a game of fourth place in the League standings. Scoring 28 points in Saturday’s 81-71 decision over Loyola, Simon established a new season high, while the total was the second-best by a Titan this season.
Bryquis Perine, Green Bay (Sr., G) - Returning to his hometown of Milwaukee, Perine led the Phoenix with 22 points, scoring 18 in the second half of an 88-75 setback. Perine’s effort helped Green Bay set a new season-high point total.
Ben Averkamp, Loyola (So., F) - Extending his streak of games with 10 or more points to seven, Averkamp averaged 14.5 ppg and 3.5 rpg. The sophomore posted 17 points at Wright State before a 12-point outing at Detroit on Saturday.
Robo Kreps, UIC (Sr., G) - Kreps moved into ninth place on the UIC career scoring list, averaging 22.5 points and 3.5 boards on the weekend. At Detroit, the senior scored a game-high 25 points to tie for ninth on the ledger before a 20-point effort at Wright State gave the Forsyth, Ill.-native sole possession of ninth.
Brandon Wood, Valparaiso (Jr., G) - Wood posted the highest single-game point effort on Saturday, recording 31 points in an 86-78 overtime victory at Youngstown State. Tying his career best with four steals in the contest, Wood came up with a key steal and assist in the closing minutes of overtime to help seal the victory, which kept Valparaiso in contention for the League title.
N’Gai Evans, Wright State (Sr., G) - Keeping the Raiders in contention for the Horizon League regular season championship, Evans averaged 20.0 ppg in Wright State victories over Loyola and UIC. The point guard went 14-for-24 from the floor, adding nine rebounds, six assists and four steals.
Kendrick Perry, Youngstown State (Fr., G) - Carrying over his strong play from the previous week, Perry scored 14 points in the Penguins’ 62-60 win over Butler, knocking down the game-winning three with 20.9 seconds to play. The freshman’s end-of-game heroics continued into Saturday, when he hitting the game-tying jumper at the buzzer, forcing overtime in an eventual 86-78 loss to Valparaiso. Perry finished the contest with 15 points.
