MILWAUKEE, Wis. -- Junior Emily McClellan of the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee women's swimming team was selected to compete for the United States at the 2013 World University Games, USA Swimming announced this week.

The Games will be held from July 6-17, 2013 in Kazan, Russia, with the swimming portion set to take place July 10-16. McClellan, who is one of just 17 American women selected, will compete in the 100-meter breaststroke.

"I am so humbled and honored to have the opportunity to be a part of this team," McClellan said. "I am really looking forward to getting to see a different part of the world and represent my country on a international stage. I work very hard and I feel fortunate that my efforts have rewarded me with a spot on the University Games roster. I am so excited for this upcoming summer and I look forward to swimming fast and meeting new friends."

McClellan had an outstanding summer, just missing a berth to the London Olympics after coming in an incredible sixth in the 100 breaststroke at the Olympic Trials. She then won the 100 breaststroke the U.S. Open, one of the nation's premier events, by nearly a full second.

That came on the heels of another dominating season with the Panthers, helping Milwaukee to its second women's league title in school history and first since 2001. The junior posted the Horizon League's first-ever A-cut times, automatically qualifying her for a return trip to the NCAA Championships where she competed in three events.

She was also one of two Panthers named to the 2012 CollegeSwimming.com Division I Mid-Major All-American teams, earning First-Team status for the second-straight year.

"We are so proud of Emily and her accomplishments this summer. We know that she will not only do a great job representing Milwaukee, but the United States as well," Milwaukee swimming & diving head coach Kyle Clements said. "She has become an outstanding athlete and an amazing ambassador for our sport and school. We are looking forward to another great year for her and her teammates here at UWM. Her team has already taken to the pool and they are working towards a third Horizon league title."

Taking place every two years, the World University Games are an international multi-sport event organized for university athletes by the International Sports Federation (FISU). Swimmers on the 2013 World University Games Team roster were selected based upon their performance at the 2012 U.S. Open Championships. All athletes selected for the team must be at least 17 years old and less than 28 years old on Jan. 1, 2013.
