Milwaukee's Waldhart, Valpo's Kulaga Honored as U.S. Army Scholar-Athletes of the Month

INDIANAPOLIS -- University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee junior swimmer Jeremy Waldhart and Valparaiso University senior basketball player Agnieszka Kulaga have been named U.S. Army Horizon League Scholar-Athletes of the Month for November, League commissioner Jonathan B. LeCrone announced Friday (Dec. 5).


Waldhart (West Bend, Wis./West Bend East) won six of the 11 races in which he swam during November and was runner-up in two others. A versatile swimmer, he competed in freestyle, backstroke, breaststroke and individual medley events and has helped Milwaukee to an 8-4 record, already the Panthers' most wins since the 1997-98 season.


As a business major, Waldhart carries a 3.951 grade-point average and has been named to the Dean's List every semester at Milwaukee. Last winter, he was selected to the Horizon League's All-Academic Team and the ESPN The Magazine Academic All-America Second Team.


Kulaga (Tarnow, Poland/I Liceum Ogolnoksztalcace) averaged 22 points and scored at least 20 points in every game in November as Valparaiso opened the season with a 3-1 record for just the third time in school history.


Kulaga graduated from Valparaiso in three years with a 3.8 undergraduate grade-point average in internatinal business and now has a 3.85 GPA in graduate school as she pursues an MBA. She was selected to the ESPN The Magazine Academic All-District Second Team last season and has twice been named to the Horizon League's Academic Honor Roll.


The Horizon League instituted the U.S. Army Scholar-Athlete of the Month awards as a way to recognize outstanding academic and athletic achievement by its student-athletes. To be eligible for the honor, a student-athlete must maintain a cumulative grade-point average of 3.20 or better (on a 4.00 scale), have completed at least one year at the member institution, passed 24 semester or 36 quarter hours and perform well during the week's competition. Winners are selected by a group of League faculty athletic representatives, from nominations provided by sports information directors.
