MILWAUKEE - New University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee Director of Athletics George Koonce has been named one of the Top 10 Sports Business Leaders in the state of Wisconsin.

The list was published this weekend by the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel.

Meanwhile, Koonce will join Wisconsin Governor Jim Doyle at three stops this week as part of Wisconsin Covenant Day activities.

Koonce and Doyle will appear together in Madison Tuesday, LaCrosse Thursday and Stevens Point and Kenosha Friday.

In putting Koonce at number-10 on the list, Journal Sentinel Business of Sports writer Don Walker said, "Koonce, a former Marquette University associate athletic director, looks like the right choice for UWM as the university looks for a way to take a higher profile in the Horizon League. Koonce also brings skills as a fund-raiser to his new position."

Koonce was named to his new post at UWM last month and officially began duties this month. The former Green Bay Packers linebacker has served administrative stints at East Carolina, Marquette and with the Packers before being hired to lead the Panthers.

The number-one person on the Journal Sentinel list is Major League Baseball Commissioner Bud Selig, who once owned the Milwaukee Brewers and still keeps his main office in Milwaukee. Two other state athletic directors made the top 10, with Wisconsin's Barry Alvarez at number-six and Marquette's Steve Cottingham at number-eight.
