No. 4 Green Bay 65, No. 9 Cleveland State 53
No. 4 Green Bay defeated No. 9 Cleveland State, 65-53, in the opening game of the Little Caesars Horizon League Men’s Basketball Championship on Saturday at Joe Louis Arena.
Jordan Fouse led Green Bay with 18 points, while Carrington Love had seven steals to set the Horizon League Tournament record, which was previously held at six.
Cleveland State was paced by Demonte Flannigan who had 15 points. Green Bay led the entirety of the second half, opening their biggest lead at 13 points seven minutes into the second half.
Cleveland State battled back and made it a three-point game with less than three minutes remaining, but the Phoenix went on a 7-0 run to close the game and advance to play the winner of No. 5 Milwaukee and No. 8 Northern Kentucky at 1 p.m. on Sunday.
No. 5 Milwaukee 86, No. 8 Northern Kentucky 69
No. 5 Milwaukee earned an 86-69 win over No. 8 Northern Kentucky in the second game of the afternoon at the Little Caesars Horizon League Men’s Basketball Championship at Joe Louis Arena.
Matt Tiby led the Panthers with 21points and 11 rebounds, including a stretch midway through the second half where the senior forward cashed in 10-straight points for Milwaukee.
The Panthers and Norse opened the game hot behind the arc, as each team cashed in four 3-pointers in the first eight minutes of the half. Milwaukee held a 44-28 lead at halftime and extended its lead to 22 points early in the second frame.
Northern Kentucky battled back with a 10-2 run midway through the half to cut the deficit to 11, but the Panthers responded shortly after with an 8-2 run of their own to put the game out of reach for Northern Kentucky.
Senior guard Tyler White led the Norse with 23 points on the afternoon. Milwaukee moves on to play No. 4 Green Bay at 1 p.m. on Sunday at The Joe.
No. 3 Wright State 74, No. 10 UIC 42
No. 3 Wright State claimed a 74-43 victory over No. 10 UIC in the third game of the Little Caesars Horizon League Men’s Basketball Championship on Saturday at Joe Louis Arena. Wright State cashed in on 14 3-pointers (14-for-28, 50.0%) in the game and shot 42.6% from the field.
The Raiders were led in scoring by JT Yoho who had 15 points in the victory.
Wright State went on a 13-3 run to close out the first half and picked up right where they left off to start the second half, going on an 11-2 spree to open a 26 point lead. The Raiders defense continued to stifle the Flames down the stretch of the game, holding UIC to six baskets (6-for-26, 23.1%) in the second half.
Dikembe Dixson, the Horizon League Freshman of the Year, led UIC with 18 points and 11 rebounds on the night.
Wright State will play the winner of No. 6 Detroit and No. 7 Youngstown State at 3:30 p.m. on Sunday at Joe Louis Arena.
No. 6 Detroit 92, No. 7 Youngstown State 79
Senior guard Carlton Brundidge scored a career-high 28 points to lead No. 6 Detroit to a 92-79 win over No. 7 Youngstown State in the fourth game of the 2016 Little Caesars Horizon League Men’s Basketball Championship on Saturday at Joe Louis Arena.
The game was a back-and-forth affair early on before Detroit opened up a 10 point lead with a 13-2 run with six minutes remaining in the first half. Youngstown State answered, going on a 12-3 run of their own with just over a minute left in the opening frame. However, Detroit closed out the half on a high note and held an 11 point lead, 47-36, at the break.
Youngstown State pulled within six points with just over five minutes remaining in the game, much to the thanks of sophomore guard Cameron Morse who led the Penguins with 26 points, but the Titans held on and advance to Day Two of the tournament where they will face off against No. 3 Wright State at 3:30 p.m. on Sunday at Joe Louis Arena.
