Oakland and Youngstown State Take an Early Lead Through Day 1 of #HLTF Championships

Youngstown, Ohio - The Oakland women and Youngstown State men track and field pulled out to an early lead through day one of the Horizon League Indoor Track and Field Championships at the WATTS.

Through four events of the men’s heptathlon Youngstown State’s Isaac Agyemang is in the lead with 2,748 points, followed by UIC’s Michael Crepeau and Milwaukee’s Noah Meeter. The heptathlon concludes tomorrow with the 60 meter hurdles, pole vault and the 1,000 meter run.

Records fell during the women’s pentathlon. Detroit senior Aisha Potts-Tyre broke the Horizon League pentathlon and WATTS record in the 60 meter hurdles with a time of 8.84 seconds in the shot put with a throw of 12.55 meters. Northern Kentucky senior Emily Grubb broke the pentathlon record in the long jump with a jump of 5.65 meters. Going into the final event, one point separated first and second place. New to the league, Northern Kentucky sophomore Jordan Horning took first with Grubb coming in second, Tyre rounded out third place.

In the men’s pole vault, Valparaiso sophomore Alexander Watson claimed first clearing a height of 4.55 meters. On the women’s side Karlie Place took the victory for Milwaukee clearing a height of 3.70 meters.

Youngstown State junior Savannah Osborne earned the long jump title edging out the competition with a jump of 5.75 meters. Milwaukee junior Nate Pozolinski won the long jump with a jump of 7.39 meters.

YSU swept the weight throw, Connor Neu repeated as the men’s weight throw champion with a throw of 21.10 meters breaking his previous championship record of 20.94 meters.  Sophomore Jayne Corbett won with a heave of 16.40 meters.

Oakland claimed the last four running events of the night, claiming the men’s and women’s 5,000 meter run and the Distance Medley Relay.  In the 5,000 meter run, Bryce Stroede finished first with a time of 14:35.87 while Miranda Haas finished in a time of 17:30.60. In the distance medley relay, the men came through the finish line at a time of 9:56.77. In a tight race, the Golden Grizzlies women pulled ahead to take first with a time of 12:11.46.

Milwaukee senior Marquis Johnson broke the 200 meter dash event record during preliminaries with a time of 21.44 seconds. The previous record was set in 1993 at a time of 21.45. Youngstown State freshman Chad Zallow broke the event record in the 60 meter hurdles during preliminaries with a time of 7.75 seconds, the previous record being 7.82.

The final day of the championships will take place Sunday kicking off with the final three events of the men’s heptathlon at 9:00 am ET, followed by field events at 11:00 am ET and the finals of the running events at 1:00 pm ET. Events will be carried live on ESPN3.
