St. Francis Brooklyn 68, Oakland 62 (Maui Invitational – Mainland)
Stony Brook 104, Detroit 102 (2k Sports Classic)

The Oakland men’s basketball team is still searching for its first win of the season after a tough loss to St. Francis Brooklyn in the consolation game of the mainland bracket of the Maui Invitational. For the second-straight day the Detroit men’s basketball team had the final shot, but fell short at the buzzer in a 104-102 triple overtime loss to Stony Brook on Sunday at Calihan Hall.

St. Francis Brooklyn 68, Oakland 62
Oakland fell to St. Francis Brooklyn, 68-62, in the consolation game of the mainland bracket of the Maui Invitational on Sunday at the HTC Center. Travis Bader led the Golden Grizzlies with a game-high 30 points while Corey Petros added 13. Oakland couldn’t find the net in the first half, going scoreless for over nine minutes.

St. Francis Brooklyn was led by Jalen Cannon with 22 points and nine rebounds. Brent Jones posted 11 points, 10 in the second half, while Sheldon Hagigal added 10.

In the closing minutes of the game, Oakland went on an 8-0 run, tying the game at 60 after consecutive 3-pointers by Bader and Mitch Baenziger with less than two minutes remaining.

Both teams traded baskets and then Cannon scored on a layup, adding the free throw after the foul to give SFB a three-point play to lead 65-62 with 33 seconds on the game clock. The Grizzlies had two chances to tie the game on 3-pointers by Bader and Baenziger, but both shots missed the mark. The Terriers grabbed the rebound and made free throws at the other end to close out the game.

The Golden Grizzlies trailed by as many as 12 points in the first half after going over nine minutes without a field goal (11:21 to 2:06). Bader then knocked down a big 3-pointer to close out the first half as St. Francis Brooklyn led by nine at the intermission, 29-20.

Stony Brook 104, Detroit 102
For the second-straight day, Detroit had the final shot, but fell short at the buzzer in a 104-102 triple overtime loss to Stony Brook on Sunday at Calihan Hall. Jameel Warney finished with 32 points for Stony Brook, including a layup with five seconds left in the third overtime to help seal the victory. The game was part of the 2K Classic benefitting the Wounded Warrior Project.

The Titans trailed by three 100-97, before battling back to take a 101-100 lead with 2:25 left in the third overtime. Stony Brook then took the lead again 102-101, before Juwan Howard made a free throw to tie it 102. Warney then grabbed an offensive rebound and made the put back with five seconds left to win the game.

Senior co-captain Evan Bruinsma led the Titans in a career day with 32 points, including 20-of-22 from the free throw line, 14 rebounds, three assists and two steals. Howard had a new career-high of 25 points and added seven assists, three rebounds and two blocked shots in another outstanding performance. Sophomore guard Carlton Brundidge also pitched in 19 points with five rebounds and two assists, while freshman guard Matthew Grant added 11 points.

The Titans led by as much as five in the second overtime 93-88 with 1:27 left, before Anthony Jackson was fouled while draining a three-pointer to convert a four-point play and bring the Seawolves back to within one 93-92 with 1:14 left. Grant then split a pair of free throws to make the lead 94-92, before Warney made a layup with nine seconds left to force the third overtime.

The first overtime saw Stony Brook (5-2) jump out to an early four-point lead 79-75, and then 81-77 with 1:41 left, before four straight free throws from Howard and Bruinsma tied the score in the closing seconds.

The second half was filled with runs as both teams led by as much as 10. Detroit started the half with five quick points to go up 44-34 with 18 minutes remaining, before Stony Brook answered back with a 20-0 run over the next eight minutes to take a 54-44 lead with 10:24 left. The Titans then responded with a 6-0 run to trim the lead to 54-50 with nine minutes left, before eventually tying the score at 60 with 5:16 remaining. Detroit then regained the lead with an 8-2 run over the next three minutes to go up 68-62. The Titans would hold that lead until Jackson drained a three-pointer from deep in the corner as time expired to force overtime 75-75.

Stony Brook led by as much as six, 14-8, early in the first half, before Detroit responded with a 31-15 run to build a 39-29 lead with just under a minute to go in the opening stanza. A three-pointer from Scott King trimmed the Titans lead to 39-32 as both teams entered the locker room. Howard led Detroit with 11 points, while Brundidge had eight and Bruinsma six.

Detroit shot 41.2 percent (28-of-68) overall, including 26.5 percent (9-of-34) from downtown, while Stony Brook shot 45 percent (36-of-80) overall, including 34.6 percent (9-of-26) from beyond the arc. The Seawolves won the battle on boards 49-42, including 18 on the offensive glass, but the Titans made up for that by making 37-of-43 free throws compared to Stony Brook's 23-of-29 for the charity stripe. Detroit also forced 13 turnovers and blocked five shots in the game.

Stony Brook was led by Warney, who finished with 32 points and 21 rebounds – 11 offensive boards – while Jackson had 24 points and six assists. Carson Puriefoy pitched in 16 points, while Dave Coley added 14.

Warney was named the 2K Sports Classic benefitting the Wounded Warrior Project Player of the Tournament, while both Jackson and Howard were named to the all-Tournament team. Toledo's Julius Brown and Florida Atlantic's Pablo Bertone were also named to the team.
