Oakland's Cox, Detroit's Coopola Highlight Cross Country Weekend
In their first cross country race as a Horizon League member, Oakland took both the men’s and women’s team titles at the Golden Grizzle Open.
On the men’s side, Michael Cox took the individual title with a 5K time of 15:50:2; while teammate teammate teammate Bryce Stroede finished in third with a time of 15:58.8.
On the women’s side, Louisa Coppola of Detroit took the individual title with a 4K time of 15:17.5. Oakland went on to take the next nine spots to place nine runners in the top ten.
In other action, Wright State and Cleveland State competed at the Dayton Flyer 5K Invitational; while Youngstown State competed at the Duquesne Duals.
Oakland's Michael Cox wins Golden Grizzly Open for Men's 5K
ROCHESTER, Mich.- Michael Cox won the men's 5K event at the annual Golden Grizzly Open in 15:50.2 while Sammy Mondry crossed the finish line first for Oakland in 15:20.6, just three seconds behind the event winner on Friday on the grounds of Oakland University.
"I believe in this group," commented a satisfied coach, Paul Rice. "We've been training hard and right away you can tell that they're a special group this year. We had a great turnout today, the course is in great shape and I'm really excited."
The top ten finishers in the women's 4K were dominated by the Golden Grizzlies finishing in places two through eight all within a 32-second window. On the men's side, six of the top ten finishers were Oakland runners with Cox battling hard the last quarter mile of the race to gain the eventual two-second advantage.

ROCHESTER HILLS, Mich. (8/30/2013) – The University of Detroit Mercy men's cross country team opened the 2013 season in fine fashion as four harriers were in the top 10 en route to a second place finish at the Golden Grizzly Open, hosted by Horizon League rival Oakland on Friday evening.
"I was very happy with the way the opener went for both teams," said Director of Cross Country and Track and Field Guy Murray. "We didn't want to do too much out here, but I thought we ran two smart races."
Senior Martin Nelkie and junior Ryan Hofsess were among the leaders from the very start, but it was Nelkie who was the first Titan to cross the finish line taking second in 15:52, just two seconds behind the leader.
"I didn't really have any expectations coming into the race," said Nelkie. "Once you get going, you get more into it. You feel a lot better once you get towards the top and you get more hyped up and it builds on itself."
"Louisa (Coppola) and Marty (Martin Nelkie) both showed their veteran presence today and ran their pace and their race," said Coach Murray. "Nelkie is more of a 10k runner and if this race was another two miles, it would have been right there for him."
Hofsess ended up in fifth running the race in 16:13, while freshman Ryan Leahy claimed seventh in 16:24 and senior Sam Felton came in 10th clocking a 16:41.
Sophomore Derek Gielarowski was just outside the top 10 finishing 11th in 16:44, while freshman Austin Wigent made his collegiate debut and was in the top 20 with a time of 16:59 for 17th.
With six runners in the top 20, Detroit totaled 35 points for second place.
The Titans will return to action next week as they host the Running Fit-Detroit Titan Invitational at Cass Benton Park in Northville. The day will start with an open 5k for the men and women at 9:30 a.m., with the annual middle school race and Tommy Titan future legends race also on deck. The collegiate races will start at 11:15 a.m., as the women run a 5k and the men a 4-mile.

Senior Dan Shafer paced the WSU men with a time of 16:18 while senior Rachel Janson led the Raider women with a time of 20:36.
Wright State returns to action on Friday, September 6, at the Queen City Invitational.

Underclassment Lead The Way at Dayton Flyer 5K
KETTERING, Ohio – The Cleveland State cross country team opened the 2013 season Saturday, running in the Dayton Flyer 5K Challenge. The Vikings were led by underclassmen Saturday, as multiple runners sat out due to pre-season injuries.
"I'm really pleased with our results today, the majority of the team was running in their first collegiate race and I thought they all did a great job," head coach Joe Jaketic said. "They have all been working and running together in practice and it showed today when there was only a 30-second difference between our first and fifth finisher. Because of all the injuries, the freshmen had to step up and they certainly did, and that bodes well for the rest of the season."
The top five finishers for CSU were running in their first collegiate race, paced by Ashlyn Woods who finished 28th overall in a time of 20:46. Classmate Erin Pavick also recorded a top-30 finish, crossing the line 29th overall in a time of 20:53.
Sarah Mallow and Alanna Shamrock were the next Vikings to finish, Mallow placing 32nd overall (21:12) and Shamrock placing 33rd (21:14). Amelia Holt was the final Viking to finish in the top-40, placing 35th in a time of 21:20.
Ashley Lydic and Shannon Kruger were the final Vikings to score Saturday, Lydic placing 43rd (22:27) and Kruger placing 44th (22:44). The trio of Jesse Stallings (22:51), Megan O'Keefe (24:05) and Amanda Kalain (25:59) also competed at the Dayton Flyer 5K Challenge.
"Hopefully we will have a full team next weekend and be able to improve on our times and continue to run as a team so that we can improve throughout the season," Jaketic said.
In the team results, Ohio State paced the competition, while the Vikings finished sixth ahead of Horizon League opponent Wright State.
The Vikings will continue the 2013 season next weekend, running at the Detroit Titan Invitational on Saturday, Sept. 7.
Cross Country Teams Open Campaign at Duquesne
Pittsburgh, Pa. - The Youngstown State men's and women's cross country teams opened the 2013 campaign on Saturday morning at the Duquesne Duals. Eric Rupe led the men with a seventh-place finish while Monica Ciarniello was 11th for the women.
Rupe posted a time of 26:29.4 and was in the top 10 by more than 12 seconds. Penguin Austin McLean was 10th with a time of 26:42.0, Nick Gliha was 12th with a time of 27:01.9, Jon Hutnyan was 16th with a time of 27:27.1, John Richmond placed 27th in his YSU debut with a time of 28:16.5 and newcomer Ethan Wilson was 53rd with a time of 30:14.8.
The men defeated Robert Morris (15-41), Carnegie Mellon (21-35) and Saint Vincent (24-31) while falling to Duquesne (18-37) and Pittsburgh (22-35).
Ciarniello paced the women and was the second-best non-Duquesne finisher in the event. The Dukes took the top nine places while Ciarniello was 11th at 19:01.4 behind Pitt's Hillary Boxheimer.
Newcomers McKinsie Klim and Libby Rogenski had strong debuts. Klim was 13th with a time of 19:13.6 and Rogenski clocked in at 19:16.0. Brittany Stockmaster placed 21st with a time of 19:41.4 while Katie Heney was 22nd at 19:44.8. Emily Maxwell, Megan Monte and Ashley Smith also competed for YSU.
The women dropped a 15-50 decision to Duquesne, a 25-32 contest to Pittsburgh and defeated Carnegie Mellon 15-50.
The men were third in the overall team standings out of six teams while the women were third out of four.
YSU returns to action on Thursday, Sept. 5 when it competes in the Tommy Evans Invitational in Akron.
