INDIANAPOLIS -- Oakland junior guard Kay Felder (Detroit, Mich./Pershing) and Valparaiso junior forward Alec Peters (Washington, Ill/Washington) have been named Co-Horizon League Men’s Basketball Players of the Week, while Cleveland State freshman guard Rob Edwards (Detroit, Mich./Cass Tech) has been named the Horizon League Freshman of the Week.
The Player of the Week nod is the seventh this year for Felder, breaking the record for most selections in a single season. Green Bay’s Keifer Sykes was the previous record holder after being selected Player of the Week six times during the 2013-14 season.
The Bob Cousy award finalist finished one rebound shy of a triple double on Friday night as the Golden Grizzlies defeated Metro Series rival Detroit, 108-97. Felder was 9-of-18 from the field for 26 points and also passed out 16 assists. The 16 assists tied for the second-most in a single-game this season in the NCAA.
Felder finished the regular season with 292 assists, including 178 in 18 Horizon League contests. Both marks set Horizon League single-season records. He has 53 more assists than Jordan Johnson from Milwaukee, who ranks second in the NCAA in total assists with 239.
Felder continues to lead the nation in assists per game (9.4) and ranks fourth in scoring (24.4). He’s also tied with Stetson’s Brian Pegg for the most double-doubles by a player listed on the roster as a guard in NCAA DI with 17. He has been named a midseason finalist for the John Wooden award, as well as one of 10 finalists for the Bob Cousy award.
The Oakland junior now has nine career Player of the Week honors. Sykes has the most in Horizon League history with 11.
Peters garnered his third Player of the Week honor this year after averaging 24.0 points and 10.5 rebounds in the Crusaders’ two road wins last week. He had 23 points, knocking down five three-pointers, in Valpo’s 80-76 overtime win at Milwaukee on Friday night. Peters scored the final basket of regulation and added five points and one assist in the overtime session. On Sunday, the Washington, Ill., native scored 25 points and grabbed a career-high 15 rebounds in Valpo’s 70-68 win at Green Bay. Peters scored seven of his 25 points in the final 4:11 of the game as the Crusaders overcame a late second half deficit to win.
The junior now has 1,546 career points to move up to seventh on Valparaiso’s career scoring chart.
Edwards claimed his third Freshman of the Week award this year and first since Horizon League play started. He averaged 16.3 points and 5.3 rebounds for CSU in three games last week. The Detroit native finished with 19 points and five rebounds to lead the Vikings past Northern Kentucky on Thursday and scored 20 points with eight rebounds against Wright State on Saturday. It was his fourth 20-point game of the year. Edwards finished the regular season with 29 starts, tied for the second most by a freshman in CSU history and one short of equaling the record. His 960 minutes played this year are the most in a season by a CSU freshman.
Top Performers for the Week:
Kenny Carpenter, Cleveland State (So., G) - Carpenter averaged 12.7 points and 6.0 rebounds in three games last week. He had 15 points and seven rebounds in the win over Northern Kentucky.
Chris Jenkins, Detroit (Jr., G) - Jenkins led Detroit with 22 points at Oakland. It was his sixth 20+-point performance on the year. He also added five rebounds and two steals.
Jordan Johnson, Milwaukee (Jr., G) - Johnson posted the fourth triple-double in school history with 10 points, 10 rebounds and 10 assists in UWM’s win vs. Youngstown State on Monday. He flirted with another triple-double on Sunday against UIC when he finished with 11 points, 15 assists and six rebounds. For the week, Johnson averaged 10.7 points, 10.7 assists and 7.3 rebounds per game.
Michael Karena, Wright State (Sr., C) - Karena scored a career-high 26 points at Youngstown State on Thursday and had 18 points at Cleveland State on Saturday as the Raiders swept their road trip.
Cameron Morse, Youngstown State (So., G) - Morse led the Penguins to 1-1 week including a 94-75 win over NKU and an 87-81 loss to Wright State. Morse averaged 27 points per game, shot 50 percent (16-for-32) from the floor, 60 percent (9-for-15) from 3-point range and 92.9 percent (13-for-14) percent from the free-throw line. He scored 29 points with a career-high six 3-pointers against Wright State. Against NKU, Morse score 25 points on 8-of-16 shooting from the field. He scored at least 20 points on 15 occasions and 12 times against league foes. Morse finished the season leading the Horizon League in scoring with 23.3 points per game.
Top Freshmen for the Week:
Jordan Andrews, Youngstown State (Fr., G) - Andrews scored 17 points with three 3-pointers against Northern Kentucky. He averaged 11.5 points per game and shot 46.7 percent from the field.
Dikembe Dixson, UIC (Fr., F) - Dixson averaged 25.5 points, 5.0 rebounds, 3.5 assists and 2.5 steals per game for the Flames last week. He led all players in scoring in games at Green Bay and Milwaukee. He added career-highs in assists (5) and steals (4) at Milwaukee on Sunday. He has scored 20 or more points in seven straight games and in 12 of his 13 last overall.
Drew McDonald, Northern Kentucky (Fr., F) - McDonald notched his fifth double-double with 20 points and 12 rebound at Cleveland State on Thursday. All five of McDonald’s double-doubles came in HL play. He closed the regular season with 12 points and eight rebounds at Youngstown State.
Josh McFolley, Detroit (Fr., G) - McFolley scored 15 points and added four assists in Detroit’s game at Oakland on Friday.
