Rochester, Mich. - Sophomore Takara Martin had strong performances at the 2014 Canadian Swimming Championships in Saskatoon, Saskatchewan July 16-19, qualifying for a pair of national swim events with her career-best times in three breaststroke events.

Martin qualifies for the 2015 Canadian PanPac Trials and the 2016 Canadian Olympic Trials. Both events will be held in Toronto, Canada.

On July 17, Martin placed 10th in the A final of the 100-meter breaststroke with a time of 1:13.70. Martin advanced to the A final with a prelim time of 1:12.68, which was ninth-best among qualifiers and set a career-best time in the event.

Martin then swam the 50-meter breaststroke on July 18, tying for 15th in the prelims before placing 17th overall with a time of 34.05. Martin started the meet with a 19th place finish in the women's 200-meter breaststroke with a time of 2:41.13. Martin also set personal bests in both swims.

"I was very impressed with how Takara really attacked the spring and summer training," said Oakland swimming and diving assistant coach Shawn Kornoelje. "She was focused on making her qualifying times and it showed when it counted in the finals. She is learning and growing by leaps and bounds as you would expect someone that is ultra-competitive. She wants to be great for her and her teammates as she works through the next three years of her swimming at Oakland."

The Golden Grizzlies are coming off their 2014 Horizon League Championship in women's swimming and diving, extending the team's streak of consecutive conference titles to 20.
